I usually blog about the Bible or Christianity, but since I read "1984" for the first time I wanted to write a review of it. And since much of this is relevant to societal problems, I thought some FReepers might be interested.

(And I realize this was a bit lengthy so I apologize...but it's a great book!)

It is a great book - required reading in my tenth grade English class back in the 60’s. The film version with Richard Burton and John Hurt is very well done.

America today is enduring a racist witch hunt, our generation’s McCarthyism.

We're not seeing a resurrection of McCarthyism.

We're seeing a resurrection of the Brown Shirts, of the Rwandan genocide.

They want most of us dead, the rest of us in chains.

Thanks for that, sir. You might be interested in something I read on openculture.org
It’s a letter Aldous Huxley wrote Orwell on publication of 1984. Huxley had been an early actual
teacher of Orwell’s at school, and Huxley claims his vision of the future in Brave New World might
prove to be more accurate than Orwell’s.

That was one of the truest, most chilling, most damning and most thought-provoking piece I’ve read in a very long time.

Well done! :)

I actually got around to reading it for the first time in 1983. It is an eye opener.

It’s truly mindboggling to see the Left now rush to this book and somehow see themselves as Winston

The really should use a mirror to read it.

Great job on your summary of the book. That book did much to mold my Conservative thinking. I read it as a teenager back in the 1960’s, along with animal farm. I preferred the black and white version of the movie, to the newer one.

The technological advances I read about in the news pretty much every day, remind me of Orwell’s prophetic thinking. I don’t think people have a clue how we are entering into an electronic concentration camp...willingly....where we are monitored even more closely than Orwell could have imagined. I fear for my kids and grandkids.

"Homophobia" and "homophobe" are good examples of Newspeak, but they are more than 15 years old.

I recall a conversation with a friend of mine, probably in the 1990s (he died in Jan. 2001 of cancer) about the word "homophobia" which he insisted was a valid word. He was a liberal college professor but not a homosexual (was married to a lovely woman to whom he was very devoted).

I read an article a while back by Orwell’s (adopted?) Son.

He grew up on the nearly deserted Scottish Island of Jura. It was an almost ideal childhood. Hunting, fishing, hiking with his father.

Probably a great place to write a novel too.

“It never ceases to amaze me how happily Americans today will hand over their privacy, freedom, and personal information as long as they get to keep their smartphones and Facebook pages.”

We haven’t had even 65% eligible voter turnout since 1908. Most of the time it has been way less than that, and around 40% for off year congressional elections. That Georgia 6th district election that was supposedly so important and prominent in the news cycle for a few days? Only 43% of eligible voters bothered to vote in that thing.

Now ask yourself if these %s are a good thing or a bad thing for society. But first consider that the dumbest 10% of voters already supposedly decide all elections, because they are the ones who somehow manage to vote but can be swayed one way or another. The so-called ‘swing voter.’ They have no consistent political philosophy they can articulate, but are swayed by things like personal appearance or debate skill or perceived popularity.

Orwell’s 1984 is a powerful book.

I will say, I do take issue with the usage of the term “McCarthyism”. McCarthy was a good man, he should be recognized as a hero and a patriot.

It is the left that vilifies him, and has indoctrinated generations to unfairly do the same. If you educate yourself about him and what went on, you can easily recognize the tactics of the left used against him are the same ones being used today.

Other than that criticism, I enjoyed your posting.

Great analysis. You are pretty spot on in your writings.

Unfortunately, Orwell had it wrong. In the future, we buy our own cameras, and our biggest fear is that no one is watching. Sign of the times, I guess.

Re: Nuclear War

It is still very much a possibility. A nuclear bomb in a suitcase is completely possible. And.... an EMP attack would set this nation back to the dark ages for a good long time and kill millions.

Re: “ The Party has carefully made sure they will always remain too stupid, lazy and comfortable...”

This is why I am on this forum, almost daily, crying out for the abolishment of government schooling. ...But....Conservatives seem to be asleep as our nation's indoctrination camps ( schools) are consistently filled to the brim with the children of conservatives and Christians.

Conservatives! WAKE UP! Stop sending your children into these Marxist-run indoctrination camps! Work for the complete shut down of government schooling!

“Orwell described himself as a socialist...serves as a warning against the direction in which his movement was headed. “

The problem with socialist is that they are dumb enough to think socialism isn’t what it actually is and somehow they’ll do it differently.
