It is good to see work opportunities come back to fly over America. Work is good for the soul of the individual and community. Yet given that the reported value of the dole being $30K annually, why would one work for $26K? Rhetorical question, or is it?

Several of the buildings, including the former officer’s quarters of Ft. Oglethorpe are still there. the officer’s quarters are now private homes. One of the buildings, perhaps the old post headquarters on the main road through the town is the 6th Cavalry museum. http://6thcavalrymuseum.org/home0.aspx

The post was active from 1902 to 1947.

It is definitely worth the hour or two to visit it, especially if you are also going to be visiting the Chickamauga Battlefield that is next to the town.

Here's a little trivia about Roper Corporation. It's a wholly owned subsidiary of GE Appliances. This particular plant is where GE high end wall ovens and free standing ranges are manufactured. Its also the post profitable of GE's production facilities.

GE bought the facility in the late 80s (maybe early 90s) for the manufacturing capability in a nonunion environment. Whirlpool objected. So they worked out a deal where Whirlpool bought the rights to the Roper brand name!

One last twist - GE Appliances is now owned by the Chinese company Haier and their official name is now GE Appliances, A Haier Company.

Now you know the rest of the story!

Here's the bio of the company's CEO. You won't need to read past the first paragraph.

I looked at this a little closer. It appears that the "Roper Corporation" is the brand name that was bought by Whirlpool, not the GE Appliances company that is owned by Haier.

So feel free to cheer the hiring of more Americans by them.
