We've been digging for this kind of news story for a long time. Monday, we told you jobs and life are going back into the old Macy's building at Medley Centre in Irondequoit.
It's a 750 job call center.
The goal is to open the call center in the fall. The renovations inside the former Macy's store should be done by August. Right now it's just a big open space.
The mall is owned by one company called Morgan Communities. The Macy's building is owned by Flaum Management and that's where the call center is going.
Loren Flaum, CFO Flaum Mgmt.: I used to shop here as a child. I remember walking through Macy's as a young kid here and I'm excited to see it come back to life.
Loren Flaum is the CFO of Flaum Management. We met outside the Macy's old top floor entrance. The call center will be run by Conduent -- the company created after Xerox split in two.
Loren Flaum: They wanted to make a splash and a presence for the Rochester community. They're very committed for producing high quality jobs for Rochester.
Conduent says it's moving its call center from the Xerox plant in Webster to the Macy's building. It's bringing 400 call center jobs and adding another 350. Flaum calls them "decent, middle class" paying jobs. The call center will fill the top floor of the Macy's building. Monday, I shared the news with Irondequoit taxpayers outside the town library.
Bill McCormick: I think it's great. It sat empty for a long time and it's a beautiful piece of property and let's do something with it.
Simone Wyatt: To be able to bring something like that into the area, into the community, opening up jobs, giving that area a fresh start.
Margaret Milne: Very exciting. I'm excited to see something happening with the mall.
I asked Conduent to share information on how people can apply for these 350 jobs. The company told me they don't have that yet. When we get we'll share it with you.
I think Flaum is associated with casinos.
That’s going to be a big hit for Webster.
Macy’s? McCurdys USED to be there across the street from Sibley’s. I worked for McCurdy’s in the late 70s downtown.
My mistake. The dead Medley Centre FKA Irondequoit mall that failed due to gimmedats busing in to the city outer ring/suburbs and mugging shoppers.
Loren must be all of 25 yrs old to remember shopping at Macy’s in the Medley Centre as a kid.
