Because, at that time, the “fashion” industry was pushing the severely anorexic look, which neither men nor women liked. The song and its popularity was an equal and opposite reaction to gay men telling women what their bodies should look like. The insult aimed at Jane Fonda was icing on the cake.

And it was a pretty good song, too.
