Trump’s hidden back channel to Justice Kennedy: Their kids
The Politico ^ | April 6, 2017 | Shane Goldmacher

After Donald Trump wrapped up his first speech to Congress and worked his way through the crowd, he lingered on his handshake with Anthony Kennedy, the 80-year-old Supreme Court justice.

The boom mics picked up their seemingly private conversation.

“Say hello to your boy,” Trump said, “Special guy.” “Your kids have been very nice to him,” Kennedy replied. “Well,” Trump said, “they love him, and they love him in New York.”

While the White House is focused this week on shepherding Trump’s first Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, through the Senate confirmation process, the president and his team are obsessed with the next possible vacancy....

Heck, Trump has a hidden back channel to the Clintons, too, if the children are counted. Aren’t Chelsea and Ivanka reputed to be friends? Daughters of the reigning monarchs?

And, isn’t Chelsea a buddy of one of the Bush twins? It must be some kind of sorority.

Brown is 67. I would urge an equally constitutionalist, but younger, nominee who is likely to serve longer after confirmation.

She's also not on Trump's famous "list of 21," although I suppose he's not bound to choose solely from that list.

I know she’s not young, but she’s highly influential to other judges.

I don’t buy that Ivanka Trump and Chelsea Clinton are friends. Their social circles in NYC may, and probably do, overlap. That would pretty much be the extent of it.

On the other hand, I understand from the Podesta emails (and general gossip) that Chelsea and one of the Bush twins (I think Barbara) are friends, tho Chelsea told the Bush daughter about her demand to audit the Clinton Foundation which Podesta and others considered “not smart” as Bush ran to R operatives to inform them of the audit.

Remember the Bush girls left a ‘love letter’ to the Obama daughters as the former’s family left the White House and the latter’s moved in. They followed that up 8 years letter with a glowing letter commending the Obama daughters on their handling life in the WH.

Ivanka Trump was never part of that sorority, as she’s now 35, married, and mother of 3, considerably older and in a far different station of life than the Bush and Obama daughters at the time their dads entered the WH.

I'm not very fond of the general idea of presidents or administration officials having informal chats with federal judges. There are always cases before the court in which presidents and their administrations have some sort of unilateral vested interest, and these types of interactions in public can arouse suspicion.

I seem to recall that at the beginning of the Obama administration, he engaged in some conversations with SCOTUS justices that were photographed. And look what the SCOTUS did on some key cases that eventually came before it, like upholding the constitutionality of Obamacare.

In the case of Trump and Kennedy, though, the conversation seemed to be confined to non-judicial matters. That's good, but the optics are still bad.

I saw it on TV. There is nothing here other than small talk and saying hello after Trump Addressed Congress when he spoke very briefly with Kennedy. Trump shook hands with many others after his address It’s what all presidents do when they address congress and the nation.

True about the age but she’s, politically, a more difficult target, and, also, not a fan of government intervention in the private sector from what I’ve read so far.

Good comments.

I hope you are right about Ivanka. I was initially very positive about her, and all of the little Trumps.

Two things that have made me wonder a bit are 1) the fact that Jared and Ivanka have Jamie Gorelick on retainer, and 2) the power they seem to be accumulating in the White House. I hope that is warranted, and that Trump is not blinded by familiarity or nepotism. I don’t want another undeserved political dynasty established, like the Bushes or the Kennedys. I’d say Clintons too, but Chelsea is going to flunk out of that role, IMHO, no matter how hard they try to sell her.

Well, how to do you resolve years of socializing and maybe even friendships?

I know many politicians and judges through social events and as some as friends.

When you become president are you suppose to “Unfriend” them?

the beginning of the Obama administration, he engaged in some conversations with SCOTUS justices that were photographed.

I believe that was the little trip the usurper took over to the court to warn the SCOTUS not to look into his eligibility issues.

Trumps sister MaryAnn Barry was on the federal bench with Sam Alito. She spoke for him at his confirmation hearing. Alito has spent time at the same dinner table as Mr Trump.

Which says our President runs with the big dogs!

You don’t get to be a federal judge by being a social isolate. All those judges know one other, know the lawyers, know the power players. You can’t expect them to withdraw from interacting with their old friends who - by the way - helped them get where they are today. That’s how it works.

Talking about Kennedy retiring how about Ginsburg who looks like death warmed over? I meant that in the nicest way I possibly could considering she’s a left-wing loonie. Kennedy can go to blazes for his opinion on gay marriage making it the law of the land!!
