Former Defense Secretary and CIA Director Leon Panetta said Monday that there is no evidence “at all” to back President Donald Trump’s claim that his predecessor, former President Barack Obama, ordered wiretaps inside Trump Tower during last year’s election.
The president, Panetta said, owes Obama an apology and ought to admit that “a mistake was made” when he leveled the accusation on Twitter earlier this month.
“I don't think there is any evidence here,” Panetta said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” when asked about Trump’s wiretapping allegation. “The president frankly ought to acknowledge that a mistake was made, apologize to President Obama and move on. Move on. He's got too many other issues to deal with.”
While lawmakers from both parties have pushed back against the president’s allegation and said they have seen no evidence to support it, officials from the Trump administration have held fast to their position that the president will ultimately be vindicated. Unable to offer their own proof to support Trump’s assertion, they have voiced strong support for investigation into the wiretapping claim by the House and Senate intelligence committees on Capitol Hill.
FBI Director James Comey, who reportedly sought behind the scenes to get the Justice Department to knock down Trump’s allegation when he first made it, is scheduled to testify publicly Monday before the House Intelligence Committee, where he is likely to be asked if there is any proof of the president’s accusation.

The last thing Trump needs to do is apologize.
If it comes to that trump should don a uniform stand before a huge flag and issue his “explanation”.
These days the Democrats wouldn’t see any evidence of the Grand Canyon if people were trying to blame its existence on them.
Going way back to George W Bush and the WMD — all the best intel sources (foreign and domestic) swore that Saddam had WMD, so President Bush said that Saddam had WMD.
For whatever reason, WMD were not produced and paraded on the 6 o’clock news. Therefore — the media said: President Bush lied to the public.
Now, people like Panetta may end up with “egg on their face” but if we play it right, it should be a case of “collusion” with a lot of people knowingly lying about the Obama-sanctioned surveillance and information-sharing with the Clinton campaign.
The Dems would play this as virtually a RICO case. That’s the smart way to play it. I would not be satisfied with mere “egg on the face”.
