Is the Czech Republic taking a hint from the American Constitution? The Interior Minister, Milan Chovanec, has authored a proposal for an amendment. He says that it would not be as strong as the Second Amendment is in the United States.
From euractive.com:
The right to be armed could be included in the Czech constitution. This controversial proposal was discussed by the Czech government this week, with the proposed EU Firearms Directive being mentioned frequently in the debate. The amendment would require the votes of 60% of deputies and 60% of senators,
The amendment was backed by the Social Democrats, the main coalition party. The position of other coalition members was not so favourable. ANO 2011, which is currently leading in the polls, was the strongest opponent.
The government has not reached any conclusion on the matter. However, the author of the proposal Interior Minister Milan Chovanec perceives this as a positive sign.
Citizens of the Czech Republic have the right to acquire, possess and carry firearms and ammunition for the purpose of protection of life, health and property and thus participate in the provision of internal order and security as well as of territorial integrity, sovereignty and democratic order of the Czech Republic. Terms and conditions shall be determined by a law."Terms and conditions shall be determined by a law." We have seen that in several state constitutions. It pretty much eviscerates the protective effect of a Constitutional amendment.
Mexico has such a system.
When I was in Prague about 14 or 15 years ago, one thing I noticed, in addition to wonderful beer, goulash soup, and bread, was a city that was reveling in its newfound freedom and the resulting prosperity. A nation that was dominated by others for hundreds of years was finally free.
Lots of people smoking, a department store with a tobacco counter. people walking pedigreed dogs, lots of Skoda cars, and historic buildings covered in satellite dishes (something that would drive the historic preservation nazis crazy). There was also a massive anti-Castro rally with people carrying “Cuba libre” flags. I fell in love with the place.
Having the right to bear arms might help to preserve that freedom.
Well, they do make some of the best firearms available, IMO (CZ).
I’m moving to Prague.
When Czechoslovakia freed itself form communism, one of the favorite topics amongst the intelligentsia was the writings of Thomas Jefferson and other Founding Fathers. When the us elected Bill Clinton (no thanks to Ross Perot), Czechs asked “Why are you going to socialism? We had it and it didn’t work.”

While I agree that the last sentence of the proposal weakens the concept, the fact that they are seriously considering this is a positive sign. Incrementalism can work for our side as well as it does theirs.
Sounds like Frankenmuth in Michigan. Nicknamed “Little Bavaria”, it specializes in everything German. I can taste the stollen bread from here.
