Transgender job fair aims to match people with employers

COLUMBUS (WSYX/WTTE) — There are jobs out there.

That's message to people gathered for one-on-one resume critiques, interview tips and networking.

But, this isn't your typical job fair. Put on by Trans-Ohio at Columbus Public Health, the gathering today was for people who are transgender or non-gender conforming.

"Trying to see a connection between the community and these employers," says Melissa Alexander, the co-chair of Trans-Ohio.

People chatted with job coaches. Later in the day, around 20 companies set up to talk to potential employees.

"We are discriminated against," says Alexander, "that is the reason why our unemployment rate is twice that of the general public so we are trying to work on that."

A City of Columbus employee even gave advice to job seekers.

One job seeker who is a recent Ohio State graduate and member of the LGBT community, has faced problems in the past when it comes to picking what to wear for job interviews.

"What do I do? Do I do what they expect me to do (wear) but not feel confident? Or do I do this? And run the chance of getting discriminated against?" says Sara Wallace, who lives in Columbus.

She calls it a minefield many people in the community have to navigate.

For many, today was about gaining confidence.

"It can come down to two words on your resume," says Wallace, "and so it is always good to have other people you know who aren't necessarily your friends and family looking at it, because they are going to be honest."

People we talked to call this a way to get Central Ohio working.

One of my tasks at the state unemployment office was planning and running job fairs, but never in my wildest dreams...

Like a little kid at Halloween: What should I pretend to be this year? Only now it's more like: Should I pretend to be a boy or a girl or something nobody ever imagined a person could be?

Of all the years for Barnum & Bailey’s to close up shop. They would have had their pick here! Bearded lady, strong woman, general freakery...

"We are discriminated against," says Alexander, "that is the reason why our unemployment rate is twice that of the general public ..." The reason you are discriminated against, is because people/businesses/corporations generally know a freak when they see one... Who would invite that kind of drama into the workplace?

Just how many transgender people are really out there. I have knowingly never met or seen one in my 66 years on Earth.

I wouldn’t hire a victim class minority. It isn’t worth the potential lawsuits and headaches. And I employ two felons.

Is it against the law to discriminate against the unattractive mentally ill?

Why would anyone want to hire the mentally unstable? If I had a business, I wouldn’t hire anyone that would scare the customers away.

Back in the early 90’s gender equity, etc. made it’s mark in career education . . . Elementary through University. There was so much wasted money for gimmicks. . .notepads, pencils, notebooks, mugs, etc.

“Why would anyone want to hire the mentally unstable? If I had a business, I wouldn’t hire anyone that would scare the customers away.”

Exactly! The young cashier that helped me recently at CVS was dressed as female, but the male voice that spoke to me was clearly someone else. Just plain nuts, just conforming to the new standard of what’s “cool.” I understand that employers are marching to the “diversity” drummer, no matter how perverse that diversity is. The very push for the word “diversity” was an Alinskyite tactic of the homosexual agenda. America was always diverse. The pushing of the term diversity was a facade for this..and the Islamist migrant red carpet campaign. Not every variation of human behavior is all that great or sane or safe.

I understand that those behind this agenda want to train the rest of us to get used to them. I have so far not gotten used to this and hope to God I don’t ever think of this as normal or wholesome.
