The latest on foreign reaction to U.S. President Donald Trump's speech to Congress (all times EST):

11:50 p.m.

In his speech, Trump said the U.S. should adopt a "merit-based immigration system" such as those used by Canada and Australia. So how do such systems work?

Australia, with its population of 24 million, caps the number of permanent migration visas to 190,000 per year. Those visas fall into three broad categories: skilled, family and humanitarian. Two-thirds of permanent residency visas are allocated to skilled migrants, in a bid to attract highly employable people....

If America had the same rate it would be bringing in 2.6 million people a year. Plus all the temporary hangers-on. Madness.

“Madness.”
It isn’t madness for Australia which has huge empty swaths of land. They could still do a better job of not allowing the Devil’s Helpers (Muslims) in but the system is quite rigorous. My wife and looked to immigrate there several years ago and PhD’s in Education and Philosophy were not on the most wanted list. We were also nearly too old. They want people to go there and have kids not retire early. However, if I’d been a Civil Engineer ....

Australia is about the same size as the continental US but has the population of Texas. The US might not want quite so many. Australia needs people.

Merit?
Who to keep out and kick out:

1. Terrorists, Terrorist sympathizers, Terrorist enablers.

2. UnAmericans. People who use freedom of speech and freedom of religion to advocate restricting speech because they, the new comers, might get offended. People who advocate resticting the freedom of religion for their own family members out of fear their family members might change religion.

3. Murderers, rapists, DUI drivers, drunk and disorderly.

4. Welfare parasites. No person should come to the US to collect welfare: Not illegal, not legal, not refugee, not naturalized citizen.

Who we allow in:
People who work, take care of their families. People who don’t try to force their hand in my pocket. People who agree to assimilate. People who understand and practice the concepts in the Declaration of Independence, and in the Constitution.

merit-based! He’s gone beyond his campaign promises. this means most of the illegals deported won’t get back in. and millions around the world that would be self-supporting with real skills can get in. it’s immigrants like that that made this country great, not the self-seeking ignorant third-world entitlement-grabbing mobs.

To be clear he is talking about LEGAL immigration here. Canada lets in about 500,000 per year under legal immigration (that would be a 5 million equivalent to the US). It is a mix of merit based (speaking French helps) and family re-unification.

I believe then our refugee levels are around 75,000 but our shiny pony wants to increase that.
