And it could be that while unemployment and the economy worsens, he could have undermined the messaging so much that he can actually control exactly what people think.

A second part of this story is that they are already planning to blame Trump for expected increases in unemployment.

However, we know that the bogus unemployment numbers are based on people actually looking for work. As the economy picks up, some of those who dropped out of the job market will actually start looking again. (Indeed, this has already happened in some areas.) This uptick in job seekers will make "unemployment" go up!

So while Obama got a pass as people dropped off the back end resulting in lower unemployment. Trump will get blamed as job seekers increase unemployment.
