When Donald Trump won the presidency in November, Shawn Moran’s border patrol colleagues high-fived and hugged each other.
“There was a real sense that we were going to be able to do our jobs again,” said Moran, vice president at National Border Patrol Council. “That turned out to be true.”
Border Patrol and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents complained for years that then-President Barack Obama constrained their ability to fulfill their mission. Trump campaigned on a promise that he would unleash them — and vowed to make large-scale deportation of undocumented immigrants a priority. This won Trump the endorsement of Moran’s group, which represents Border Patrol agents, and the National ICE Council, a union that represents ICE officers.
Now, Moran said, the president is keeping his promise. Immigrant rights advocates, who were horrified at a multi-state deportation effort that swept up more than 680 people last week, agreed.
“They feel emboldened and they feel that now they have a president that’s basically is going to give them carte blanche,” Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), a frequent critic of ICE tactics, said in an interview.
The Obama administration, in its last years, considered only serious criminals and recent border-crossers priorities for deportation. During those years, ICE often released non-criminals and individuals who only had committed immigration-related crimes, like driving without a license....

It’s time to authorize a whole lot of overtime for these guys.
They need to be deporting them faster than they are sneaking in. That number would be in the thousands per day.
Consider tiny little Belize. It shares a border with both Guatemala and Mexico, two of the largest sources of our illegal immigrants, yet has little problem with either. Why? Because they protect their borders!
I used to work at a federal detention center with dozens of Deportation Officers.
I contacted one of them this week and he says for the first time in 8 years they can do their jobs again. No more “priority groups” of illegal aliens, and no more “hands off” certain ones of those groups. All are being treated the same....as illegals!
I would hope that each one of them could deport more than one per month. When the next 4 years are over, their shouldn’t be an illegal alien problem left that’s worth talking about.
We need to shut down the border now, while we build the wall.
I wish President Trump would ask for volunteers from retired military and police to assist ICE. I bet there would be plenty of volunteers, starting with me.

In places like LA County an agent shouldn’t have any trouble averaging one a day !
What I haven’t heard much about is expanding the ranks of Administrative Law judges and streamlining the deportation hearings. There should be no continuances, appeals, or whatever extends these proceedings. Mexicans have announced they plan to jam the immigration courts, and that is the last thing we need. Immigrants by law need to prove they are here legally, rather than a court proving they are here illegally. Yet, somehow the deportation processes go on and on and reportedly can cost a quarter million dollars !
This is one reason why getting them to self-deport is so attractive. Mandatory e-verify for all employers and landlords along with prosecuting those scofflaws is much cheaper than the immigration courts. Quick deportations and civil forfeitures are also incentives, but expensive.
agree 100%. They obviously plan on jamming everything up for the next 4 years as much as possible and keeping Trump’s hands tied with whatever fabricated scandals they can create as much as possible. Their actions are straight out of west point: blocking, containing delaying, deceiving, disrupting, denying, fixing. This is basically a war without all the bullets. They have improved their game IMO and we need to up ours as well.
680 people a week out of, perhaps, 30 million? ICE is going to have to put a couple of zeros on that number to make any kind of dent in the problem.
You make some good points. I wonder if there are judges that have retired that would be willing to work solely as immigration judges to help speed up the trials. As I understand it, illegals are given court dates and a majority of them never show. Rather than releasing them, what about holding them at detention centers at or near the border with a court in or nearby the center.
If they are caught near the border, that’s fine. I don’t new arrivals they even get much of a hearing unless they can make a credible claim for asylum. If they are caught elsewhere, transporting them is premature. Remember that there are illegals from all over the world, not just south of the border. Even those from latin America should not simply be shoved across the border. They should be flown to the far side of whatever country they are from, with nothing but the shirt on their backs, to make it as difficult as possible for them to try to come back.
I agree with you that illegals should NEVER be released during the deportation process. It might even speed up the hearing process if they are told they will go to a maximum security prison with rapists and murderers while they wait for their hearings. Or they can drop their case and agree to immediate deportation and avoid being butt-hurt in prison.
Spot on. I’d even go so far as to allocate money for the first million or so who self-deport. Say, $1000 per family or $500 per individual, which would be collected at the nearest U.S. Consulate in their home country six months later.<>Then ratchet it down to $500/$250 for the second million. Then announce that those who apply for visas would be given a spot in the REGULAR line once the number applying for self-deportation and DOING IT reaches three million or whatever. Anyone else would be deemed ineligible. Watch that trickle gradually turn into a torrent.
WTF? Illegal aliens have the right to be deported. (As opposed to being shot down in the street like rabid dogs.)
