The FUNDAMENTAL Problem, ECONOMY-WIDE
The Market Ticker ^ | 1/30/17 | Karl Denninger

Posted on 01/30/2017 10:49:27 PM PST by Auntie Mame

Consider good or service "X". The producer has to compute a price to sell at. His computation is comprised of the expense to produce the good or service plus a profit.

. . .

Two things constrain his profit: 1) The ability for the consumer to refuse to buy at all and 2) competition.

Now let's enter the world of drug prices . . .

“We think we should always be value-based,” Celgene Inc. Chairman Robert Hugin said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. “If the drug doesn’t provide value to the system and to the patient, we shouldn’t have price increases, or the price will change.”

Note what's missing: Any discussion of the actual cost of producing the drug.

In other words: We will sell it for whatever we think the value is to you.

That never, ever works in a competitive market and nobody says that in a competitive market.

Yet in the drug business the model is "how much is an extra year of life worth for a cancer sufferer"? They "figure this out" and that's the price. . . .

This all changes, however, if the consumer can force someone else to pay; now the limit is whatever funds the forced party has. . . .

So how do you get the above "infinite pricing capacity" model in the real world?

You . . . get the government to force others to pay.

You restrain competition.

And, ultimately, you get government to force "society" to pay if the consumer cannot.

. . .

Why was Obamacare passed?

Because the medical and health insurance industry was on the verge of collapsing on their own. The amount of leverage (debt) they had taken on was too high and couldn't be paid off. . . .

Heavily edited in this poisting, this is an excellent essay. It's another follow the money reminder. Denninger takes a few swipes at Trump but don't let that deter you. He just can't help himself.

Karl Denninger is a smart man, but he voted for Obama. I might read his writings for the information they contain, but when it comes to his conclusions or prescriptions... they go straight into the dumpster where they belong. I mean seriously, he voted for Obama.

There are 20 trillion problems + 100 more million × 0% interest rates. The butchers bill is coming due.

Healthcare was, and still is, heavily subsidized by voluntary charity. From Seventh Day Adventist and Catholic and Presbyterian and Jewish Hospitals to telethons on TV to cute ads for St Judes to the biggest of all.

Massive numbers of people at work, at church, in the Little League, in the labor union, in voluntary organizations give out of their pocket voluntarily.

The nature of government coercion entering the charity market is that is co-opts and destroys the voluntary institutions. Those institutions of voluntary charity are also institutions of voluntary social control. They not only distribute charity, they motivate the sick to get well. They motivate people to voluntarily seek the approval of their neighbors. They educate people that nothing is free.

Government does not motivate. Government mis-educates by hiding the cost.

The cost of government is not just in ledger entries of dollars. The cost of government is in the destruction of voluntary institutions of social control.

Alexis DeTouqueville had it right in Democracy in America.

“If the drug doesn’t provide value to the system and to the patient, we shouldn’t have price increases, or the price will change.”

If the drug causes harm it does NOT belong on the market!@@@@@ When our FDA has to Flag or Black Box one of your drugs they need to be REMOVED from the market due to the damage they cause.

The essay could have been titled: How crony capitalists conspire with socialists to put their industry on a path to government takeover, once they, the crony-capitalists, have taken everyone’s money and left everyone in debt.

Your title is much better. I thought the title of the article was awful. Yours is perfect!

Free markets/free trade between the 50 states rule. Across international borders not so much.
