N.Y. pol asks Trump not to interfere with state's medical pot

ALBANY - The lead state Senate sponsor of New York's medical marijuana law has written to President Trump asking that the feds allow such state programs to continue.

Sen. Diane Savino (D-Staten Island) wrote to Trump on Dec. 9 when he was President-elect encouraging him to direct his Attorney General nominee Sen. Jeff Sessions "to respect the wishes of the citizens and elected officials of 29 states and allow carefully regulated and closely monitored medical cannabis programs to continue without undue interference from the federal government."

Despite the growing number of states allowing some type of marijuana use, the drug remains illegal at the federal level. Sessions, an Alabama Republican, opposes marijuana legalization and last year told a Senate hearing that "good people don't smoke marijuana."

Savino asked Trump to keep the current Justice Department policy that has U.S. attorneys focus on the black market for marijuana that results in drug trafficking, the sale to minors, or diversion to states where pot is not legal rather than go after legally-enacted state programs....

“to respect the wishes of the citizens and elected officials of 29 states and allow carefully regulated and closely monitored medical cannabis programs to continue without undue interference from the federal government”

Not what happened w/gay marriage. Statewide ballot measures consistently and overwhelmingly were against gay marriage.

Did no good.

I say allow it, but heavily tax it. Just like they did with cigarettes and other guilty pleasures. Real heavy taxes.

I think pot is probably low on the priorities.

We need the federal withholding taxes on sanctuary cities, and since we seem to be stuck with some abortion law, shortening the legality to quickening or heartbeat.

Well, that was the thing. Marriages legal in one State must be recognized in all. That’s why the big push for GM in any State.

Perhaps, or more. Pot is already out there, and there are many costs to government associated with it. The government should derive some revenue to defray costs elsewhere, like intoxicated drivers who cause accidents, users who cause mayhem or crime, and medical services.

Priorities are one thing. Laws are another. Either keep laws and enforce them fairly for everyone, or alter them or do away with them to reflect reality on non-enforcement. We have too many laws and regulations, many of which are stifling the ability of folks to be law-abiding. It’s a real mess. President Trump will do some good to reduce regulations and meaningless laws - of course the people he selected will do the grunt work, but Trump is putting them on course to do these things.

Lucky you. Not to have to watch a loved one whose suffering is only relieved by medical marijuana.

What is needed is approval for research and development along with regulation requiring closer vetting of patients who really need it.

Actually- there was posting early am - indicated that Pena Nieto is funded by Sinola Cartel and that there main source of revenue is importing Pot to US.

If the states are so enamored with the product let people grow and use their own. Get the state govt out of dealing illegal drugs- see how many squeal when the revenue is cut off

I think it’s currently 25% in Oregon. I talked to a guy that said he was paying about $1 a gram around Christmas.

In Washington state, the state growers grow the pot and it is sold through legal stores which are awarded a license on
a lottery basis.

I’m sure that some illegal is still brought in, but the legal price keeps dropping on a regular basis so it probably means that some of the purchasers who bought the illegal are buying through the stores.

Snarky. Does your loved one have medical insurance? If legalized, insurance would pay much of the costs.

My wife has been suffering from several cancers for the last decade. Some of her chemo treatments cost $10G to $12G, and it is covered by insurance. Her pills are very expensive, much more expensive than marijuana. You aren't the only one watching someone suffer. My wife has undergone surgeries, that were quite painful to recuperate from. How dare you call me lucky.

Florida passed a constitutional referendum (which I despise) for medical marijuana.

To appear on the ballot, the FL Supremes must approve the wording of any popular measure.

The lawless FL Supremes, those who swore oaths to the Constitution, permitted nullification of federal law.

“Florida passed a constitutional referendum (which I despise) for medical marijuana.”

I & my family voted for this wonderful, long over due amendment. For folks like me who use cannabis as medicine because no pharma meds helps us—this amendment is a great thing.

28 states now have medical marijuana laws/programs. I expect that number to gradually increase over the next 10 years. I thank God for His this healing plant & pray anyone who needs cannabis for medical reasons is able to use it without fear of prosecution.
