'We're Gonna Have a Great 8 Years Together': Trump Invites Overlooked Heroes Into His New Home

On his second full day in office, President Trump hosted an event at the White House to thank law enforcement officials and first responders and emphasized his support for them.

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)

During the event, Trump thanked the law enforcement for the “safety success” at his Inauguration and said, “We're going to have a great eight years together.”

Trump's presidential campaigned focused largely on security and law enforcement, and he branded himself the “law and order candidate,” bringing attention to the individuals who put their lives on the line, often without thanks, to protect lives.

During a rally in July, Trump spoke about the epidemic of drugs and gun violence in cities such as Chicago and the need for enforcement of laws saying:

"We must maintain law and order at the highest level or we will cease to have a country, 100 percent. We will cease to have a country. I am the law and order candidate.”

The president has spoken extensively about concerns raised by law enforcement officials about government officials imposing regulations and reforms that are making it harder for law enforcement agents to do their jobs.

Law enforcement officials have raised concerns that top government officials will rush to judgment and fuel anti-police sentiment among Americans, rather than try to alleviate matters.

An article on Heat Street cited the civil rights investigation that was launched shortly after Michael Brown was shot in Ferguson, Missouri, before all the facts were in, as an example of politicians hurting instead of helping community relations with law enforcement.

“Rather than encouraging the country to wait for the facts to emerge and permitting Missouri to handle the matter, President Barack Obama swiftly announced a Department of Justice civil rights investigation just two days later and sent Attorney General Eric Holder to Ferguson to investigate.”

After no charges were brought against officer Darren Wilson, violent protests broke out in Ferguson and racism was attributed as the reason for the death of Brown. However, regarding the Department of Justice investigation conclusion, the article notes:

When the shootings are viewed, as they must be, in light of all the surrounding circumstances…as established by the credible physical evidence and eyewitness testimony, it was not unreasonable for Wilson to fire on Brown. This hushed absolution, however, could not compensate for the unjust way in which Obama tacitly tainted the events of Ferguson by declaring a civil rights investigation into a state matter where no violations existed and by using Ferguson, a case of lawful self-defense, as an opportunity to focus on 'police brutality.'

In recent years, race relations between police officers have moved from bad to worse. At a Black Lives Matter rally in December 2015, protesters chanted:

“What do we want? Dead Cops! When do we want it? Now!”

To further underscore a growing sense of disrespect for law enforcement, a painting depicting police officers as pigs was hung in the United States Capitol and was then rehung after being taken down. The painting was finally taken down for good.

Law enforcement and first responders accepted Trump as the law-and-order-candidate and supported his candidacy as various law enforcement unions endorsed him.

In September, the Fraternal Order of Police, the nation's largest law enforcement union boasting 330,000 members, endorsed Trump for president, bolstering his claim that he was the candidate who most cared about law and order.

Whether or not Trump wins a second term remains to be seen. What seems clear is that Trump respects our nation's law enforcement officials and wants them to feel safe without fear of backlash in doing their jobs.

2020 will be even better than 1984.

How sweet it is to have a President that backs up law enforcement instead of the dirtbags.

He will only get re-elected if he sticks to the rule of law.
If he goes wobbly on illegal aliens he won’t get elected again.
The illegal DACA MUST be stopped to restore the rule of law.

Looks like a man in control. Of everything. And is used to it. Even to “Let’t take some pictures.”

Pretty much a statement of fact that pictures would be taken.

And he looks like he has the ability to delegate effectively. I have not taken a shine to his mannerisms over the years (and now) but I clearly recognize someone who knows both how to delegate and how to hold people to results.

I say this without having ever seen him for more than ten seconds at a time (before this election) and only while passing by a television. Haven’t watched television for going on 20 years now (except for sports).

That said, President Trump looks well fitted to the yokes of power. Perhaps, as other FReepers wrote, he will work for us instead of the other way around.

Agreed. He isn’t a politician in the usual sense, and he genuinely seems not to care what people think of him.

Refreshing, especially since there have been a few presidents in the last few decades or so who wouldn’t do anything without sticking their finger in the air.

I like nearly everything I have seen (tweeting, statements, and cabinet nominees for the most part) it remains to be seen how hard he will fight...and whether he will follow through. Looks promising.

Wonder who earned invites? This is wonderful. A President without sinister ulterior motives to his every move.

Well, I saw the DC police arrest over 200 protesters and use tear gas on them during the inauguration, and then there were the police in Portland or Seattle who also stood their ground and used some level of force to disperse that crowd after sending the innocent bystanders off to safety.

A little more of that and the riots and protests wills top soon enough.

It’s so nice to see a true alpha male in action.

And he doesn’t lord it over people.

He comes across as a caring, compassionate man for those who need it and tough as nails for those intent on playing games.

I hope his example wears off on many of the males in this country. It’s been too long without them seeing what a real man can be like.

I met a Navajo Code Talker, Sam Holiday, yesterday in Tombatone, AZ. That was a thrill for me and a day never to forget to come face to face with a hero. Just had to mention it.

I’m rereading his 1987 book The Art of the Deal.

It provides great insight into the man.

You have given some good suggestions on titles to read in the past, so...I am going to check this one out. I didn’t have much interest in reading it before, but as you said, might fill in some blanks for me.

The great thing about The Art of the Deal is that you can open it to any page and just start reading.

It’s almost akin to a Kurt Vonnegut Stream of consciousness format, but with redeeming qualities.

Oh, and thank you for the compliment.

The only reason even I have Trumps’ book in my house is that it was required reading for my wife when getting her MBA.

It was published the year I graduated high school, a lifetime ago!
