Watching good dogs work over a first-person pheasant hunt will keep you warm and have you looking for your shotgun.
Some of us in the hunting community will cringe at the sight of any pointing breed creeping on a bird when it should be holding the point, and worse, chasing on the flush.
Maybe the hardest thing for me was with 40 seconds left watching the dog bring back a downed bird and dropping it at his feet, only to watch it break and flush again. We taught our pointers (with the help of professional trainers) to hold until given the out command, and it saved a few wounded birds from escaping. See the video here.
I was able to witness the highly trained hunting dogs years ago. It was incredible how they worked out front and pointed until the hunter got into position and commanded the flush, and then watch the dog prance back so proudly with the bird. However, I grew up walking the field without such trained dogs, and having the bird launch out next to your leg and fly forward into the same field!! After re-chambering a new shell calming down, we then continued pushing the birds to the end of the field where all hell broke loose. :-)
I remember those days. Did my pheasant hunting on Ft. Riley, KS; as well as in some of the fields surrounding the Post.
