Internet Problems Right Now??
Free Republic ^ | January 11, 2017 | little jeremiah

May I ask a question of anyone - I just sat down at my laptop to do a few things and the only site I can reach so far is FR. Nothing else. No gmail, no national weather service, Drudge, Breitbart, etc. I can mysterious access FR. Every other site I keep trying is not opening. Am I the only one this is happening to?

I get this message on Chrome:

This site can’t be reached

twitter.com’s server DNS address could not be found. Try: Checking the proxy, firewall, and DNS configuration Running Windows Network Diagnostics DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG

And this on Firefox:

Server not found

Firefox can’t find the server at forecast.weather.gov.

Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of www.example.com If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Hey, little jeremiah: quit typing. We can’t hear what’s going on in your bathrooms.

sorry....virtual private network (VPN) allows you to have a private connection over a public network.

It allows me to securely log into my employers network from my home computer.

I really like wooden window frames and fountain pens.

The only thing I miss about wooden sash windows was that they were 'double hung', that is, you could raise or lower the top or bottom.

We're getting new vinyl windows next month, and they're all going to be in that style. Our house will finally be able to breathe.

Great list. I remember all of those things. Most of those are things my kids have never seen or experienced.

Factory ashtrays in cars
Clotheslines and clothes pins
Whitewash
Slide rules
Silver coinage
The milk man
Girls in skirts
Drive in theaters
Wing windows
Hand operated garage doors
All wood furniture

Etcetera...

I’m a tech dummy but I do know that my computer has been running slow and I get those “site cannot be reached” pages now and then the last couple of days, I think it started when I went to look at the Drudge report, ironically.

Internet goes out all the time. This was just a totally new one to me - no internet except for FR! A first.

We use Obihai devices to get free phone service. Frequently after a power outage they will still be working even though we can't get online with the computers. That is a little similar I think.

You nailed it. Jim owes it to the world to assure the stability of the interwebs by clamping down on the behaviors you listed.

If that does not work, you could try a different DNS server. Follow these instructions to try using a different DNS server. https://www.opendns.com/setupguide/?url=familyshield

That's funny. Telling a guy who can't access other websites to go to another web site for help.

Power Cycle Everything. (You may need to pull the battery out of your Internet Modem to do this if it has battery backup).

Are you going to help him reconnect to his ISP when that wipes out all of his settings?

I’d suggest you run what ever spyware you have installed. Sounds like you picked up a virus somewhere. And if you don’t have good spyware installed, you’ll likely have to take it into the shop for a total cleaning and set up with spyware / antivirus protection. I had the same issue. Cost me $150 bucks to get it sorted out.

At least on my Motorola cable-modem all of that data is stored in non-volatile memory. If it wasn't then when ever their was a power failure everyone with dead batteries would be unable to restore their internet.

No ISP would go for a setup like that. My cable modem, like most peoples, in provided by the cable company, in my case Comcast/Xfinity.

Hand-cranked drills, egg beaters and food grinders.
A button on the floor of the car to turn on the brights with your foot.
Every suburban family had a croquet set.
Swim caps required in a public pool.
Pleated tartan skirts.
Penny loafers and saddle shoes.
Coin slots in buses.
Metal see-saws, slides and monkey bars with no safety padding underneath.
Bicycle baskets.
Sheet metal molded lawn chairs.
Shoeshine kits.
Pipe and tobacco racks.
Shaving brushes and straight razor blades.
Old Spice, Canoe, and English Leather.

You're not alone. The idiots at my power company (Eversource) have a message when you call to report your power out: "You can also report any outages through our web site".

Really! If I had power to run my computer and modem I wouldn't need to report an outage.

Frankly I wasn't aware a modem even needed a battery back up. I thought all the firmware was on non-volatile ROM. Or, more likely, and EEPROM. Battery back up would maintain the user information like user name and password. Updating the firmware would require the power be on the whole time.

I've never seen a message about the battery in any modem I've set-up or installed.

DNS DOMAIN NAME SERVER, They maintain a directory of domain names (freerepublic) and translate them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (209.157.64.200) which is FRs’ IP address. You may be experiencing a Denial-of-service attack.

Happened to me on my laptop the other day. I had to reconnect my laptop with the wifi.

Now, I am working fine.
