Anyone who lets those incompetent creepy SOBs anywhere near their data or PC is a fool.
The ‘experts’ rely on a Swiss Army knife CD/USB/utility that does the thinking and heavy lifting for them. Then there was the scam where GS staff merely conected machines to the internet so workers in the IT equivalent of overseas sweatshops making $2/hr could do the diagnostic and repair work.
More than one blogger has documented GS workers snooping through personal data eg photos and in some cases copying photos to flash drives without owner permission or knowledge.

You don’t need to trash the whole PC, just pull the hard drive and destroy it. There are a lotta places that will take a good working PC off your hands w/o the drive, either nonprofits or a used PC store giving you some bucks for it.
Or give it to a friend/relative to whom it may constitute a hardware upgrade
Another option is to pop the drive into your new machine as a second storage drive.
If you have nothing that would cause you trouble on the HDs, you could also use them as external storage drives via something like this -

Geek Squad stole nude photos

I worked at a print shop a long time ago and some customer became very angry when he had us print colored photos of his nude wife. They were popping out of the printer where anyone could see them.
