Iron Mike is showing the little pukes a lot more civility and respect than I would.
22 years since I earned my wings. 21 since I earned my blue cord at Mother Benning’s School for Wayward Boys.
I believe that Lenin referred to such people as "useful idiots." Boy, are they going to be surprised, that is if we don't save them from themselves.
Ditto for us Combat Engineers!
(AKA Infantryman with a shovel...)
LOL, as a butterbar in 76, I made the princely sum of $666 per month. After taxes, car payment and car insurance, I think I had $300 to live on the rest of the month.
One of my "extra duties" was ARF Commander (Augmentation Reserve Force) of a 40 man unit that supported a nearby Nike-Hercules battery. During nuclear surety inspections, we were always called on for a simulated terrorist attack.
We had 4 hours to respond with 40 soldiers and two towed Vulcans. When we arrived we issued live ammo to everyone, and the Vulcans were loaded to the breech. For most, it was the first time they played infantry since Basic.
Fortunately, I had 4 years of small unit tactics in ROTC, our program has always been one of the best in the country. In the 6-7 times I ran an ARF, we never had any accidents.
As you might expect, NSIs were taken very seriously. At the outbriefing, the entire chain of command was there, to include the Deputy CG of 32nd AADCOM. He made my day when the Team Chief made a comment about my ARF not responding quickly enough. First time I'd ever been criticized for beating a mission time by 30 minutes. I wasn't going to take my troops over there unprepared.
When the team left, BG Archie Cannon starts his comments by pointing his finger at me, and said "LT, I'll take that hit for you. Anytime you want to give your soldiers extra training, you have my permission." All's well that ends well.
You are right about them cultivating Islam, and it would be to do their fighting for them, then abandon them like they did the blacks.
I had my head up me butt but the one I had wasn’t on any property rolls. I should have mailed it home in pieces. It had a selector switch and the 1st Cav Sniper School had reworked the trigger, lock time, and glass bedded the stock. It was a sweetheart.
When I joined the army, I had a couple of years of college but no degree. I was an army brat as my old man was a retired master sergeant, but I had no clear plan about the MOS I wanted.
I took the ASVAB and did well enough that they invited me back for another test. This was the strangest test I’ve ever taken.
It was a test with just me one-on-one with the tester. He had a cassette tape player and I had a test booklet and an answer sheet.
Each section of the test consisted of me reading about incomprehensible, gobbledegook sounds and what they mean. Then the tester played these same gobbletigook sounds on the tape player combined in sentences, and then I had to mark on my answer sheet the meaning of the sentences.
I had no idea the aim of this test, but it became clear later when the army offered me an intelligence MOS with language training.
I jumped at that and after basic training I found myself at the Presidio of Monterey for 52 weeks of Russian language training. Nothing but Russian, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
The Presidio was a posh posting, and I’ll always remember it as one of the best years of my life.
But alas, in my time in Germany I was a chairborne ranger in the intelligence corps - no infantry experience of any kind.
But I still managed to qualify Expert with rifle and grenade!
Good read. Could have been written by a everal men and one woman in my immediate family.
Thanks for posting.
Please refrain in the future.
Me too, and I’m a girl. :-)
As you say. Sometimes, authenticity is necessary to carry the full weight of passion and meaning.
Thanks, friend. It really needs a bit of an update, but it’s no less relevant today.
LOL! Great comeback. I don’t care who ya’are, that right there’s funny.
