From my own personal experience, go with the white sheet.

I used a red felt tree skirt one year. When I watered the tree, some of the felt got wet. I didn't notice until we took the tree down.....my carpet had a big pink spot on it!

Last time I used red! LOL (Luckily, the carpet was very light and I could carefull bleach the spot. Over time, the sun bleached out the remaining stain)
