My son's deer rifle of choice is a Rossi carbine in .357 Magnum. The extra barrel length turns the Magnum caliber into a whole different animal; think 500 fps additional velocity over the book ratings.
I didn’t have a chrono but it was obviously powerful. No question that with the right bullets it could take any North American game.
.357 Max in a rifle is a lot of fun. I built one a few years ago. Heavy bull barrel on an old single shot Ithaca shotgun action.. Really neat looking firearm.
But it is a pussycat compared to the 500.
I live in a state where you can deer hunt with pistols and pistol rounds in rifles. My uncle hunts with a single shot .50 rifle. My son and I hunt with Marlin lever action rifles chambered in .44 magnum. I can hit a paper plate at 150 yds all day. Don't need more range in these parts. Well placed shot will drop a whitetail at that range. Really good coyote and general varmint gun as well.
