That arrest probably cannot happen before January 21st, but probably the holidays and colder weather in some regions will diminish the protests. They would likely start up again in the spring, so Trump and associates should be looking at strategies to make that less of a concern.
I have a rather novel suggestion on all this — triage the illegal immigrants. Go hard after the criminal element, work out a pathway to citizenship for the productive, and give a blanket amnesty to the so-called dreamers. This would cut the legs out from under the left, while at the same time fulfilling the main promise of deporting the bad hombres. And I think it might create a new source of support for Trump.
It won’t hurt the economy. A lot of the people who are in America illegally are taking jobs that few others will do. Getting them into the legal economy will increase taxation revenue and force employers to raise wages in general. Given Trump’s energy policies, gas prices are likely to fall so placing a bit of upward pressure on them can be handled.
Perhaps this is the real meaning of the Trump revolution, to break down insoluble problems that ideologues have not been able to resolve, and move on. America is a huge nation in terms of economy and population. If it’s true that there are twelve million illegals and three million are “bad hombres” then the net residue is about nine million, roughly three per cent of the population. Still make it clear that from now on, only legal immigration will be acceptable, and keep the pressure on criminals.
The long range forecast for all of December was pretty nice.
Now, not so much. This weekend is supposed to turn into winter. Saturday will be our last nice day of the fall.
And yes, the cold weather and snowstorms will drive a lot of them home.
