You need a gun that can meet all your hunting needs? A pump shotgun may be what you are looking for. If you're on a budget, or you are the kind of hunter who likes to keep it simple with survival in mind, consider getting one gun that will cover all your small and big game hunting needs.
The video from Backwoodsman is definitely food for thought when you want to get one gun that will serve you well in marsh, forest and field. A pump shotgun, like the Mossberg 500, is a great American-made choice. With a wide variety of smooth and rifled barrels, at a very reasonable cost, you will have one gun that can do it all. What other guns do you use for hunting if youre on a budget? See the video here.
I got mine !
Go pig hunting with some Hawaiians. That’s budget. Get a couple free poi dogs (strays), walk in the forest a bit, listen for dogs barking, then stab the pig with a knife they made from a scrap saw blade and rebar.
THAT’S budget.
One could argue that the Shotgun was really the gun that won the west.
Not many had the money to buy shells for practice, the shot gun with many pellets was the way to go.
Big Game? Slugs or big shot.
In a pinch the shot shells could be opened with a knife, a melting candle could pour wax down in the shot and make a lethal weapon for that pesky claim jumper.
After peppering a target with pistol rounds (my aim sucks), I love taking out the 870 and blowing big holes in it.
I think youtuber Hickok 45 did a review some months back on a Mossberg and pointed out what the author states - a pump shotgun gives you a rifle (slugs), home defense (buckshot), and sport (birdshot).
If my attempts at scuba diving prove unsuccessful in retrieving my other guns lost in the tragic boating accident, I’ll be glad to at least have my Remington.
I have a collection of some really nice 12ga. shotgun rounds. They're made by Centurion, I think. They are 2 3/4" in length and contain a plastic, rifled insert that holds one .65 caliber steel ball. It turns my smooth bore Mossberg 500 tactical into a very accurate musket. Better range than a slug round.
I have a few Mossy 500’s about the place. Nice piece only the Remington 870 is comparable or better for a bit more money.
Here's how its done. AKA Homemade Glasers.

Note they have to be fired singly not fed into a magazine. a S/S does nicely.
Correction
Note they have to be fired singly not fed into a Tubular magazine. A S/S does nicely as does a Saiga.
Point taken. Magazine feed shot guns were not that very available until 90's.
Note the author of the videos, Barry, cautions to feed them singly by hand into the chamber.
I’m going to look for those - thanks!
Both Savage and Mossberg also produce some very reasonably priced centerfire rifles.
My Mossberg 100 ATR 30-06 is my most accurate rifle. It was only $250 and it came with a decent scope. I’ll take the 100 ATR over my more expensive rifles every time.
Amen to that; one of my coworkers just picked up a Scout in 7.62...after trying it out for myself I’m getting the same when my finances approve. Cheaper than Dirt has a nice package deal (glass included) that im going to take advantage of shortly.
I’m having to rebuild my arsenal after funding a divorce...was left with a G21 SF...just recently picked up a S&W MP Sport 2, but need something with more reach to complete the battery.

Not sure what I think to be honest.
