43 Republican Senators. Bush 41 was able to get 11 Democrats to approve-good job. Most were from red states but one, Dixon(Illinois) was the only real profile in courage and paid the price a year later by losing the primary to Carol Mosley Braun. Our turncoats were Bob Packwood and Jim Jeffords. Remember them? I was surprised RINOS Specter and Warner(Va.) went along. Today I'm afraid there are no moderates or semi-brave Democrats. Republicans? Nope.
Long term costs were 2 female Senators(among others)in the year of the woman. Calif. Gov. Wilson could have appointed Condelizza to his old seat and maybe control the damage but it's now too late. He appointed a nobody named Seymour. Talk about stupid.
Alan Dixon later repudiated his vote. There was no guarantee that any appointee of Pete Wilson’s to his Senate vacancy would’ve held it in 1992. Condoleezza Rice had no electoral experience and may have been challenged in the primary. She would’ve faced Feinstein, and Feinstein wasn’t going to roll over for any Republican.
About Dixon. In my research I found out that in 1970 a 19 year old named Karl Rove went into Dixon’s office with fake I.D. There he took 2 reams of paper(1000 sheets). He then printed fake flyers promising “free beer, free food, girls and a good time for nothing”. They were distributed at rock concerts and homeless shelters. Say what you want about Rove. To quote him he once said in a NR cruise: “Say what you want about George Bush.” In beating John Kerry and Al Gore he kept 2 morons out of the White House.” Done.
Condi was a hot-looking 36 year old at the time but you’re probably right. Still that doesn’t excuse Wilson from appointing another clone of him that stood for nothing.
Wilson should’ve appointed ex-Gov. George Deukmejian to his seat.
You’re probably right. Doesn’t mean he’d take it. We have a problem getting ex-governors to run for winnable seats. Would he put himself thru that in 94? We’ll never know.
If Deukmejian could survive the ‘92 race against Feinstein, he would’ve prevailed in ‘94 and held that seat until at least 2001.
