The United States set up Liberia.

Someone told me that immigrants are eligible for a one-time gov’t backed loan loan to open up a business, and that’s why you see so many immigrants able to open restaurants and convenience stores.

Can any Freepers confirm this?

“When she ran out of room, the university, to her surprise, allowed her to hold sales at the student union. “

I’m sure that they allow ALL the students to run profit making businesses in the student union after they run out of space in their pricey dorms./s

This is an immigrant we need!
May there be 100,000 just like her!

As the (now elderly) grandson of a immigrant, may I be allowed to point out that this very story, with different names and different home countries, has been the NORM in this country since 1776.
This very story is merely typical and not spoken about in a (NOW) country dedicated to crying, whining, and resenting those who suceeded in the AMERICAN way, on their own with a lot of very hard dedication and work.

Is Liberia to Detroit an upgrade or pretty much an even swap?

Can any Freepers confirm this?.....I can’t attest to loans, but I know they are accessible to grants. They all know how to work the system (that is NOT a slam. If they are eligible, get them before the politicians steal them.).

My point was is she getting favorable treatment because of her immigrant status?

Second point is that if she afford to board at college(I couldn’t) then why the special treatment to allow her to do business?

Probably quite an upgrade, actually.

Liberia has hundreds of miles of ocean coastline and tons of natural resources. They also have dozens of rivers and freshwater lakes that can support agriculture.

Why aren't Liberians working to improve their own country?

I can’t confirm it but I believe it. Some retail shops are just glorified garage sales and maybe some of what they sell, however unwittingly, is stolen property.

Dysfunctional and corrupt governance, I suspect, like practically every African nation.

And wasn’t the whole point so that they wouldn’t have to return the the U.S.?

Yeah. And when American blacks went there the first thing they did was enslave the local black population which to this day is a very sore point between the haves and have nots of Liberia.
