Influential House Members Planning Immigration Push in 2017

Influential House Members Planning Immigration Push in 2017 Jon Reid October 13, 2016

Two influential House Democrats are planning another shot at immigration reform next year, regardless of who controls the House.

Veteran Reps. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) and Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) have already held “preliminary discussions” about crafting draft legislation after the election, which they hope will serve as the starting point for a bipartisan overhaul of immigration laws in 2017, according to a senior Democratic aide.

While immigration reform proved too difficult to accomplish under the Obama administration, Gutiérrez thinks it is doable in the next Congress, particularly if GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump does poorly with minorities. Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric has Gutiérrez convinced that Hispanics will vote in record numbers this November. If he’s right, Republicans will again be thrust into a discussion about expanding their base. Gutiérrez thinks the election could be a watershed moment if his prediction holds true.

“There are Republican women and men who want to get this done,” the Illinois Democrat said Tuesday in a phone interview. “They’re going to have the ability to turn around to their caucus and to say, ‘How much longer do we want to just push away, push aside a growing immigrant Latino community in the United States?”’

The policy details of the proposal, such as a pathway to legalization for millions of undocumented workers and securing the border, will have to be ironed out after the players know the results of the election.

But there are at least a couple ways to kick off the debate right now. One approach, the Democratic aide said, is to present Republicans with “progressive” immigration reforms under the premise that the bill will shift to the center once both parties are at the negotiating table.

"Another possibility is to “start from the sensible center” and invite Republicans to negotiate almost immediately, with the goal of keeping them at the table throughout the process."

Friday, October 14, 2016 Gutierrez gets ready to move on immigration reform WASHINGTON - Congressman Luis Gutierrez (IL-04) is reading the presidential elections polls and assuming that Donald Trump won't be the next person to be sworn in as America's law enforcer-in-chief.

He's already getting "comprehensive immigration" legislation ready to move forward - something he knows would be dead on arrival if Trump were to be elected on November 8th.

Things being what they are, I’ll never support any Republican who doesn’t consider every Democrat as a mortal enemy.

That is how it is supposed to be. Last decent Dem I remember was Zell Miller.

It’ll be the “Ronald Reagan Immigration Bill” to give cover to RINOs and fool voters. The primary objective is “Tear Down this Wall”. /s

I agree. Zell Miller was the last Dem at the national level I supported. He was a great Governor as well. He was a former marine of the old school, his parents were educators of the old school, and he had deep love for the country.

He served sixteen years as lieutenant governor before his eight years as Governor. A primary reason Georgia remained Democrat as long as it did. His biggest mistake was backing Bill Clinton in 1992. A mistake he admitted to his staff in 1994.

You have to give Dems some credit. They never, ever stop. They don’t back down. They don’t say they’re sorry. They just relentlessly keep coming at you until they get what they want.
Too bad the Republicans aren’t a little more like the Democrats.

Already has - he and Ryan have been working on this amnesty agenda for years, before he was Speaker.

Amnesty will be the first order of business on January 21st if Clinton wins.
And it will be Ryan right there along her side.

Can these people give me a list of cities that are in desperate need of more population and traffic? Suburbs in desperate need to be more sprawly? Rural towns in desperate need to be less ruraly? I thought we were trying to reduce the carbon footprints, yet each person who crosses our border does so to increase their carbon footprint by at least an order of magnitude. Immigration causes global warming

They probably do, MSM would want us to feel that way.

However, I listened to the first 30 minutes of Infowars and was encouraged by some other metrics ;) Tho they think Hillary is trying to steal election...

They won’t need a “push” if Clintoon gets elected. She’s going to do an “executive order” like Obammie opening our borders to all those desiring to be wards of the U.S. Government and will vote for Marxist “democrats”.

Yes, and we all know that once she and the Dems are in power you can write off permanently ever getting our Country back.

It is late now for many of us Freepers in the last twilight of our lives to do anything in the future - that is if we are still around in year 2025, that it would be possible to do anything at that time, against the total takeover that was allowed to happen back in 2017.

I don’t think it’s “over the edge” to say that the Marxist “democrats” are working at replacing Americans with illiterate and very low intelligence third worlders who are a heck of a lot easy to control and manipulate than Americans are. Americans are independent, free thinkers who want the government to just get the hell out of the way. The third worlders will do anything as long as the “government” gives them something for free. Third world “refugees” love free stuff. Americans love freedom and that’s a problem for “democrats”.
