Am Shooting Journal ^ | 10/7/2016 | J Hines

Don't like dealing with the guts on your deer? Let’s face it: gutting a deer is probably the worst part of hunting. Maybe your harvest has fallen in a location you won't be able to drag it out. Or, you're over 400 yards away from your truck. A little know how of what to cut and avoiding the guts. How many of you out there use the gutless field dressing? If you're one of the newbies see the video to see how its done.

I cut along the very thin fat layer that encapsulates the guts....and plop....all in one blob into a bushel basket.

I was 19...a girl...and was wearing my best white wool sweater. The "boys" were stunned.

Oh, come on! Field dressing is a part of the hunt!

When I was a young hunter, before I finally got my first buck, my Father and Grandfather would let me gut their bucks to learn how to do it and to become part of the the fraternity of deer hunting.

If field dressing and getting your hands and forearms bloody is too repugnant to you, you really need to move into Manhattan, and have your groceries delivered to your apartment.

If the SHTF, those who don’t want to get their hands dirty are going to be at the bottom of the food chain!

Thanks for your post. There is a TV series called Longmire set in Wyoming near an Indian reservation. There is an episode where there is an Indian beauty contest. At one point the contestants have to dress out a dear wearing their best Indian finery. It was better than hearing about World peace or the cure for cancer. ;o)

A human thigh would be a substantial piece of meat. But would it be best baked or as pot roast?

if you do the gutless method, what do you do with what’s left?

Leave it for the animals in the wild?

You would eat part of a liberal????

Aren't you concerned about what diseases it might have had...or where it had been?

Took the liver and heart for hubby’s uncle. Left the rest for mother nature and her flock.

I would like to see that trick. I use my knowledge of anatomy. I start by cutting a circle around the perineum containing the sphincters and then push the pelvic floor up into the abdomen. That way there are no leaks. Open the abdomen midline, roll to the left, reach down and cut the diaphragm from the esophagus all the way out to the right. Reach up and grab the trachea, cut and pull down. Everything comes out in one piece. No leaks.

Yes, same as with the traditional gut-pile method. Either way, the coyotes will rejoice and everyone gets to hear their eerie cries of jubilation.

most people have never seen a proper field dressing, and butcher.
I suggest watching a video. I learned from my elders.
It’s easy if you know what/how to do it.

I don’t use a gut bucket; just leave the gut pile on the ground, and it will be gone within 12 hours (coyotes, you know).

I have done it on a cull hunt on MLD land when each hunter was bringing in 4-8 doe in a weekend. Wanted the hearts and liver and ribs, just did not have the time.
