I think his strategy was to appear calm and relatively unthreatening in the first debate and then keep turning up the heat on his issues in the next debates.

Slow boiling of the frog, so to speak.

The problems I have with that are that the first debate probably had the most viewers as a lot of people just aren’t that into politics, and a lot of people are making their decision and voting early.
