Toss the floss! Turns out dental flossing is barely useful, even worthless perhaps. So reported the Associated Press (AP) and subsequently more than 150 news outlets, including such as the Washington Post (”The Shaky Evidence for Flossing”) and New York Times‘s more powerful “Feeling Guilty about Not Flossing? Maybe there’s No Need.” One Web site proclaimed “dentistry is a scam.” Well, okay actually that was just Kanye West.
Only problem is they’re wrong. But denture companies everywhere must be rejoicing.
Particles trapped between teeth are the most common cause of tooth decay.
Flossing can completely remove all trapped food particles.
Brushing can’t.
I have not had a single cavity since I started flossing.
First I heard mammograms weren’t necessary every year - tell that to my grandmother who died from breast cancer.
Then I hear that pap smears aren’t necessary every year.
Little things, even flossing, that contribute to American’s longevity are being chipped away. My sister doesn’t believe in flossing and has big gaps between all her teeth.
I floss in the shower every night and get a clean bill of health from my dentist. That being said, having spent quite a bit of time in Great Britain, I never once saw a dentist office. We Americans take very good care of our teeth and I will continue to believe that flossing has a big part of it.

I use a bowie knife.
Brush and WaterPik before I go to sleep. Works well, and far less disgusting than trying to run a piece of string through my teeth.

Then there’s nasal flossing, where you run a piece of cloth up the nostril and down through the back of the throat and out the mouth... :)
Same story here. Plus, it keeps the economy of Montana afloat. I may be moving there soon...
Just saw my (Texas) dentist this morning. He liked my take on this “startling news item.” So there are not many studies that prove flossing is good. I’ve never seen even one study that says cow manure stinks, either. That is no reason to believe it doesn’t stink, though. [ I cleaned that up a lot.]
