Pence: ‘Donald Trump gets it. He’s the genuine article.’

"This nation will start winning again."

For a guy who supposedly loathed Donald Trump until, oh, the middle of last week, Mike Pence sure made a compelling case for his running mate last night. Watch this address if you didn’t last night, and you’ll get a sense of why Trump chose him. Not only does Pence make a strong case for conservative policies, but he makes an even stronger case that Trump is the guy to make them happen.

Of course, Pence has to be a lot more confident of that if the vice president is Mike Pence. But then, why shouldn’t he? From his experience in Congress to his excellent governing record in Indiana, Pence has every reason to be confident in his own abilities to help bring all this about. If Trump is a secret leftist who’s plotting to pull the world’s biggest flim-flam on conservatives once he’s elected, he sure didn’t make his task any easier by choosing this guy to become vice president:

Pence never did loathe Trump. Your assertion is invalid.

How does the author come to this conclusion? Pence talked very nicely about Trump but gave his support to Cruz. In the end his endorsement of Cruz was worthless.

Strawman arugment - make a statement that is fiction, then argue another set of facts.

Your assertion - Pence Loathed Trump until last week — prove it.

The two are awkward together. I can see him being more comfortable with Christie but he needed Pence. It should get better as he gets to know him.

I hope it won’t be a Reagan/Bush type of thing

The writer selected his own option “C” which was that once Pence got to know Trump, he liked him.

I happen to think that Pence was fooled by Cruz’s early ground game and would have been better served by not endorsing at all. Cruz was doing a whole lot of Bible thumpin’ along with his father.

I mention the endorsing because I had selected and predicted Pence for Trump’s VP early on and was shaken when he endorsed Cruz.

:)

So apparently his endorsement of Cruz played no part. So much for the continual accusation that once you cross Trump he will exact revenge upon you forever.

I’m reading the author’s intent very differently. I think the intro line, “supposedly loathed Donald Trump...” was a sarcastic smackdown of the rumor mongers at the National Review, who peddled that stupid meme last spring.

I read it as. “so much for the credibility of those ‘insiders.’” Everything else in this article was pretty complimentary to Trump and Pence.

I think Pence was an olive branch to the kind of conservatives that wanted Cruz, to give them an excuse to vote for the Republican ticket. I honestly think he would have preferred Christie or Gingrich who match his personality. However, he knew this would not be a winning combination, that a yin/yang thing would be necessary.

I believe the rumor that he would have preferred those two but went with his kids suggestion

I think his children made a wise choice, and Trump is a wise man for listening to them.
