That didn't take long. Only hours after the final results came in for a British exit from the EU, political leaders in Scotland are talking about renewing their drive to secede from the United Kingdom.
Pointing to the fact that a large majority of Scots voted to remain in the EU, Scottish advocates for independence are now claiming (convincingly) that Scotland is leaving the EU against its will.
Many of us who advocated for Scottish secession in 2014 were, of course fine with Scottish secession at the time. And we're still fine with it now. Scotland should be free to say good bye and got its own way.
Some opponents of Scottish exit, however, have claimed that Scotland is too small "to go it alone." Defenders of Scottish independence call this the "too wee, too poor, too stupid" argument. [snip]
Moreover, few Americans appreciate how enormous some American states are, especially the largest four states: California, Texas, New York, and Florida.
In terms of both population and GDP, California is about equal to Canada and with much better weather. Texas is equal in economy and population size to Australia. Pennsylvania's economy is similar in size to Switzerland.

“Texas is equal in economy and population size to Australia.”
Wow, never knew that, plus we have a lot more guns.
Scotland is a welfare state and not going anywhere
Texas’s largest cities are ultra leftist. The state’s border counties are heavily Democrat, it is home to tons of illegals, and a growing population of Muslims.
Its state government is mainly all talk and bluster since any Tim the feds say back down, that’s exactly what happens.
So for the 100000th time, Texas is NOT going to secede, when they can’t even control things now.
“could we make it if we tried?”
Texas has everything it needs to survive (and even thrive) as a sovereign nation. The only real question, is whether we’ll be pushed so hard, that we choose to leave.
I don’t know that we’re there yet, but we’re damn close.
There is no serious discussion regarding Texit, just clickbait for internet chat rooms, among people who have too much time on their hands.
Plus you’d have men like me from Alberta come in and toss our combat experience in. We love freedom, and if someone is willing to stand for it, they won’t be standing alone.
Impossible. There was this little thing called the Civil War and everyone’s favorite Republican Abraham Lincoln (not mine btw).
So, good luck with that.
Think about all the corporations that have moved here that would either leave, file a lawsuit against Texas, or both. Companies like Toyota USA. It would be devastating to the Texas economy.
This isn’t the 1800s anymore ... secession would not be an easy thing to do.
It was Texas' lawsuit against the feds that stopped the Obama executive order on immigration.
We need as many Freedom loving, Liberty loving and Independence minded people as Texas can hold, glad you are here! Also, a health skepticisms of government, doesn’t hurt.
I did live in Texas for about 4 years. In fact I lived in the liberal haven of Austin. I also lived in CA (San Fran Bay Area), Virginia, Maryland and Indiana. Even in liberal town, Texas of Austin, the “liberal” bent doesn’t touch the radical style of progressiveness on the left and right coasts.
I will add, Texas has a unique culture among the citizenry. There is more state pride and independent attitude among Texans. That is refreshing. I’m not suggesting that Texas is close to or even serious about making efforts to secede. BUT, I can see Texas erupting from the grass roots more than any other state I am familiar with. AND, if the talk ever did get serious, like a statewide ballot initiative, I might make arrangements to get moved back there. I’d hate to have to immigrate later. My daughter is a “natural born” Texan, so maybe I could use that.
When it comes to the people of Texas, I wouldn’t bet the “never” line on this topic, especially if we elect Hillary. That said, I don’t think it would be a smooth transition. Texas would have to actually make the first move, would lose at the Supreme Court level and then have to order it’s citizens and businesses to stop paying taxes with an intent to defend them from the Fed. There would be a couple years of intense stand offs as the Fed cut all funding and tried to arrest the TAX dodgers and shut down businesses. It would certainly be a painful process. But I doubt we would do the Civil WAR agains.
You always know when you are in the company of a Texan, because most of them tell you during introductions.
We have led the charge in push back. Tried against the Syrian influx, but got slapped down on that. Gotta love my state. Now if we could get rid of Dallas, Austin, and Houston liberals BS. Happy to be a Fort Worthian (in spite of my screen name)
I suggest that you hold a state referendum on the question and see where you stand first.
After the Texit, you guys are gonna have one hell of an immigration problem. Me.
Indeed!
And lots of oil. Enough in fact that we could simply refuse to send it to places like New York and let those anti fossil fuel pukes freeze in the dark.
I dream of Independence
I don't think it would or even could ever come to a Civil War again, for one thing the left probably wouldn't even put up much of a fight to keep Texas as it would essentially take a thorn out of their side and give them a lock on the presidency. And if the federal government did try to take military action to prevent it, in this day of 24 hour news and internet, the first time they mistakenly bombed a school or killed a few innocent civilians it would be all over the world news and the UN would be breathing down their necks calling for a ceasefires and negotiations, in other words, it ain't 1860 anymore..
Yes, we will always politely tell someone that we are from Texas, but we never ask others if they are a Texan. The old saying goes "Never ask a man if hes from Texas. If he is, hell tell you. If he isnt, you'll only embarrass him.
