Socialism can only be implemented through heavy authoritarianism. When there is no reward for hard work, very few people will work hard.
Socialism has failed EVERYWHERE it has been tried on a large scale. The only place it has survived for any amount of time is in places that have a large source of external income to feed the beast -- meaning the rest of the world pays for it.
And even then the redistribution is uneven: the politically connected get the most and best. Even now, there is a very small set of people in Venezuela that are living a life better than most of us.

I think you give him too much credit. He is an unreconstructed communist who had close ties to the USSR and doubtless still has those ties to the surviving international communist movement. HE KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT IT’S ABOUT . . . the tyranny you describe.
HE WANTS THAT.
But he will never admit it to his clueless supporters. That is a key tenet of Fabian Socialism: NEVER ADMIT WHO YOU REALLY ARE.
