I hope that we can retire John McCain this year. He has become insufferable.

Why this guy is allowed to keep the Republican label utterly baffles me.

Me too. But the fact is most of these 1911s are beyond repair. Hell, the one I qualified on in 1981 was pretty much one level above junk. Much better is available on the civilian market.

and the metal could be used to construct things the army could actually use.

Do you have any idea how much money the government could waste scrapping old guns for the more or less worthless metal, doing it in accordance with Mil Standards and all that?

The entire notion is bad, and this is not a positive feature, but an additional bug in the program.

“It costs $200,000 a year to store them,”

Sell 200 of them and it’s covered.

I’ve a better idea: I purchase (and other FReepers, of course) one or more on the cheap and I can swap out the old barrel for a new one and use it for practice and home defence. We are, after all, the militia our 2nd Amendment refers to and we must be well-trained.

This would help.

These M1911’s represent the US military in its great victories over history’s most formidable enemies in the epic struggles of the 20th century. These are among our most important historical relics and they were bought and paid for by American citizens at incredible personal cost and sacrifice. They should be in the hands of their rightful owners to remind Americans of what helped preserve our freedoms in those dark times. Each American should be able to see and touch these important artifacts for centuries to come.

How about giving them to schools so we can start teaching kids about them?

Sort of like the ole civil defense stuff w/the M-1, which is still in effect I think.

I guess McCain got rid of all the A-4 Skyhawks so he can move on to the smaller ordnance.

Let me get this straight. The government spends $200,000 a year to warehouse these old weapons. They army could melt them into something useful—saving us money to but the materials new.

But you are pissed because they should be sold to civilians?

Yeah, that’s a small government position. There should be no such thing as government surplus. If we are using them, melt them. If we order too many, fire the procurement person.

The government should not be the supplier of weapons for anyone but the army. You want a 1911? Buy one new or used. There are a few million of them.
