Doral has been a failed tournament venue for many years. Trump spent quite a bit of money trying to revive it, but it was too late and since he could only control inside the boundaries of the property, he could not overcome the fundamental flaws.
The players don’t really like the course, but they like even less the surrounding area. Airports are not a great place for top level tournament golf. I don’t know why Cadillac pulled out, but the fact that the PGA couldn’t find a replacement sponsor hints that the issues go way beyond the fact that Trump jumped into the political ring.
I doubt that Mexico City will work, but the PGA does want to get into the Latin market. My guess is that the money will dry up for Mexico City and the WGC event will go elsewhere in Central America.
