As China continues to posture in the South China Sea, tensions rise between China, Vietnam, Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and other regional powers such as Japan and India.
At the defense blog War is Boring, US Naval War College Professor James Holmes discusses recent developments in the South China Sea and the risk of regional conflict.

I just read a novel called, “Lash Up”, which the premise is China shoots down our GPS satellites disabling our military and while doing that, China invades/bombs Vietnam...
Some “expert” out there is always trying to drag us into yet another war on behalf of some other country and their interests. They never have enough with Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya etc. No, not again.
strangely believe it, but Obama has been listening to the Navy. A program of containment and strengthening is apparently underway.
The visit to Vietnam will result in a port for the US Navy at Cam Ranh Bay. There is talk about the navy returning in some fashion to Subic Bay in the Philippines. There is already a Navy presence in Yokosuka Japan
The Trade lanes will be protected and the Chinese navy will be contained. An alliance of the other navies and the US Navy will be formidable.
China dare not start shooting
Vietnam Nam gonna have a hard time convincing Americans we should give them a hand...
I understand you sentiment but I think it is a done deal
Of all the places to go to war for, I think I’d be allies with the Vietnamese first. Their government may be communist, but their people are friendly and truly love Americans.
I served in Vietnam from 1969 through 1972.
There was one incident where we were fired on by some VC and wound up killing most of them. There was one young woman who I shot (3 rounds to the chest). After taking her AK47 from her, we managed to get the bleeding under control and got her to a hospital. Six weeks later my CO got a letter from the women’s POW camp in Qui Nhon from the woman. She wanted to meet the GIs who saved her life and thank them. Two of us drove over to the POW compound and met her. She thanked us (Thank God I could speak Vietnamese). She asked if we would take a picture with her, and she was so thankful. She even gave me a kiss on the cheek just before we left. There was no animosity at all between former enemies.
Yeah, I’d be allies with the Vietnamese.
I don’t strongly favor renewed ties to Viet nam but there is a reality
This from their embassy web site:

VIETNAM - A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR US BUSINESSES DRAWS TOP US GROUPS
A delegation of 18 leading groups in the US will come to Vietnam to seek investment opportunities on May 3-4, 2007. US_groups.bmp
Around 35 senior managers of 18 leading groups including Boeing, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, IBM, Time Warner, Abbott, Ford Motor, and General Electric will come to Hanoi to take part in the Vietnam - a bright future for US businesses forum, which is being co-organised by the US-ASEAN Trade Council and the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry.
This is the biggest delegation of US businesses to come to Vietnam since Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) was approved and Vietnams accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in January 2007.
The Vietnamise who were repatriated to the USA (legally!) are, for the most part, hard working Americans and love to share their culture in an American context.
I’ve heard James Holmes several times on the John Batchelor show, and he paints a scary picture of the strategic goals of the PLA Navy. They have had a huge build up of vessels and now are trying to extend their reach through (unprotested) land grabs. They are not afraid of intimidating their neighbors, all the way down to Indonesia. It’s becoming obvious they wish to control the sea lanes into East Asia.
Obama is a fearful idiot.
Red China’s plan is to be able to take on and defeat the United States by 2025. Key to that plan is defeating the United States Navy. That is why Red China is engaging in a massive Navy buildup.
War is coming with Red China. They want it. The only real question is whether it will come sooner than 2025.
Agreed, Vietnamese are sweet people. I know two at my temp job.
However, he says the problem with the economy is that chinese are willing to work for $1/wk/hr whatever and Americans are not.
Only if the Kerrys and the Obamas and Clinton’s want to go carry a rifle around for the poor, oppressed Vietnam Namese. The rest of us, been there, done that.
I don’t think it’s just the south china sea either. They want to turn the whole pacific into a Chinese lake. That’s their end game.
I agree. China wants a war. China wants it. Just saying it before the liberal pukes come along and blame it on “neo cons”.
Your insight about liberal pukes is perfect.
Another item submitted for your consideration, the war will be preceded by a worldwide economic collapse. This is engineered and scheduled. It is how treasonous politicians “get out of jail free” and financial institutions grow wealthier.
When the dust settles, millions will be dead and massive wealth will have changed hands. Likely the great experiment of We The People will also have died.
Yes. Red China’s massive cheap labor is a huge problem for U.S. competitiveness. It will change. Always does. But that in itself could be a critical destabilizing force leading to war.
Very trying times are coming. Think prelude to WWII and it all snaps into focus.
If I know a fight is coming, I’m a big believer of not giving them the first punch. There is no Honor in a fight, there is only winning. The alternative is too horrible to contemplate. You fight to win at all costs. After you win, you can show compassion and see where the chips lay.
The new President of the Philippines wants better relations with China.
There have been massive snow falls in Northern China this May. Ice age is returning to northern Hemisphere. They have to move south. And the DC Elites are so stupid they are trying to cool the planet.
