http://AZ Legislature ^ | May 9, 2016 | AZ Proposition

Ballot Text:

"A 'yes' vote shall have the effect of increasing distributions from the State Land Trust Permanent Endowment Fund in fiscal years 2016-2015 from 2.5% to 6.9% of average monthly market values to benefit Arizona K-12 schools, colleges, and other beneficiary institutions, including a $259,266,200 distribution in fiscal year 2016; includes protections for state funds in the case of a severe economic downturn.

"A 'no' vote shall have the effect of retaining the existing 2.5% distribution formula from the State Land Trust Permanent Endowment Fund and maintaining funding levels for Arizona K-12 schools, colleges, and other beneficiary institutions."

I'm leaning towards "no" because it looks like a "quick fix' temporary solution by essentially raiding a 100-year-old fund. To me the REAL fix in education in AZ and other states is the HARD WORK of GETTING RID of the teachers unions and the state education power brokers.

Comments, pro or con?

Link broken, it seems.

Has there ever been a Treasurer from either party who didn’t want more cash in the till?

I voted NO. In my opinion this “cure” is worse than the disease. It looks like they plan on selling of some of the “State Trust” land to finance their School Success plan.
That is kinda like a farmer selling of his seed corn to finance his purchase of a new tractor.

“CON”. They are trying to suck out money from one of the last solvent trusts to support their pets in the education system.

I received the pamphlet on these Props and the “PRO” sides are the usual liberal/self serving suspects.

Yes that’s on one side, but what about the argument I posited on the other?

Another thought on Prop 123 and 124. If these are such good ideas, why are they being brought up for a vote in a Special Election, when the majority of the voters will not be participating? Why not in the General?

I’m inclined to agree.

Don’t you think the REAL fix in education in AZ and other states is the HARD WORK of GETTING RID of the teachers unions and the state education power brokers? I do. Teachers unions and bloated administration are a huge part of the problem in K-12 education and need to be busted up.

OK, got it. Think I’m with you.

Think I’ll send in two “HELL NO” votes.
