It really was a War of Northern Aggression...European news papers understood that and wrote about the unfair tariffs...until the North became so embarrassed 'they' began to look for a "cause"....TAADAA..slavery; slavery was always unpopular and disliked by most Americans.....Lincoln needed something to hold his Union and people together so it became the war against slavery.

I understand this is not the Politically Correct explanation....but it is a fact.

One of the biggest reasons for the death of the Whigs and birth of the Republican party was abolition of slavery.
England had military observers/advisors along with some southern units. England also had a strong abolitionist movement. And they were still f2fsore with their own rebels 45 years later.
Some historians believe Lincoln’s emancipation proclamation, after the costly victory at Antietam, kept them out of the war.
Slavery wasn’t a manufactured issue, even if Lincoln said if he could preserve the union without freeing a single slave, he would.

Just giving the damyankee perspective. If there is a CWII, I expect it will be along class lines, and again, states’ rights. The federal government metastasized after that mess.
