Clinton and Sanders seem to have forgotten the fate of Walter Mondale, the 1984 Democratic candidate, who promised to raise everyones taxes. For that promise and other reasons, Mondale lost 49 states to then-President Ronald Reagan, who went on to pass a tax simplification bill with the bipartisan cooperation of Congress. Specific promises to raise taxes has always been a political loser, which is why most Democrats try to shroud it in vague verbiage about fairness. It will be interesting to see how Clinton defends her tax increase proposals should she make it to the general election.
