Typical Ponzi type scheme.

My question is why? Why? Why?

Why does a man with supposedly enormous wealth feel the need or the urge to defraud people in this manner?

What did he eventually earn off of this so-called university scheme.

You might say ‘buyer beware’ and that is true to some extent but just because buyers don’t always beware is no excuse or reason to intentionally defraud them?

I figure that it is just one of a large number of business deals that he signed off on that would capitalize on the value of his name. The people running it must have paid a significant amount/percentage for his name and also assured him that it wasn't going to take up much of his time.

So he wouldn't have necessarily been thinking that he was going to defraud people. He probably didn't plan to set himself up for lawsuits and prosecution. But he probably knew that the people taking the courses were not going to get much from him besides his name on their 'diplomas'. And he probably had some sense that they were paying a great deal of money for an education of limited or questionable value.
