Rough way to go. I’ve seen this with dogs and whitetails a few times.
I was with a forest ranger from my state one time when we saw a deer getting chewed up by a pack of dogs out on the ice. Deer broke its pelvis and couldn’t get up from a “sitting” position. Ice was too thin to get out there and all he had was a shotgun (out of range).
The amazing thing was the makeup of the pack of dogs. Everything from a giant Shepard to a little lap dog and they all took their turns ripping the deer to shreds.
By the time we got around to the other side of the lake through the woods for perhaps a closer shot, the deer was a pile of fur and the dogs were long gone.
We carried .243’s and .270’s for dog packs on the ranch.
