Microsoft made this totally stupid change to its Windows support policy. With no notice, older versions of Windows lose support on the latest PC hardware.
Yep, that's right: You can't run Windows 7 or 8.1 on Skylake CPUs (or later). There's a woolly, limited get-out-of-jail-free card for a short while, but this is just the latest irritating Microsoft scheme to get everyone onto Windows 10.
The way it's always been in the past is that enterprises could buy today's hardware, but put their current image on it, only upgrading when it made sense. But with this move, Microsoft changes everything -- and with precisely zero warning.
I'd be raising merry hell if I were an IT manager. What is Redmond thinking? ...

“Yep, that’s right: You can’t run Windows 7 or 8.1 on Skylake CPUs (or later).”
NOT TRUE!
âThrough July 17, 2017, Skylake devices on the supported list will also be supported with Windows 7 and 8.1,â Myerson wrote. âDuring the 18-month support period, these systems should be upgraded to Windows 10 to continue receiving support after the period ends. After July 2017, the most critical Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 security updates will be addressed for these configurations, and will be released if the update does not risk the reliability or compatibility of the Windows 7/8.1 platform on other devices.â
The US intel agencies like the NSA must be pushing Microsoft hard to get everyone to adopt Win10 since it makes spying on us so much easier.
According to one former Microsoft employee paraphrasing, “Windows 10 isn’t the product, you are!”
Hmmph. Was just shopping today for a new Win 7 laptop as my 11 year old Dell is getting a bit too slow.
He’s going to drive people to Mac.
“(T)he supported list”?
Sounds mostly true, in that case. But I’m not going to play Snopes with this one.
My PC keeps trying to download Windows 10. I keep having to stop it.
My 3 year old Dell Inspirion got involuntarily upgraded to Windows 10. Now the desktop reloads over and over again. Dell support site says I’m screwed. Thanks Microsoft and Dell. This seems to be a driver issue, but updates didn’t fix it either. Sumb*tches.
I can reinstall the whole thing but Microsoft will try and force it to Win 10 again. Grrrr. Never had a Mac but I’m considering it. I’m really annoyed with this crap. Careful upgrading slightly old machines folks.
Vista drove me to *NIX 10 years ago. Never looked back.
Many years ago I was a Microsoft fan. As time passed, my admiration turned to disgust. They are a bully. They treat their customers like dirt. I hoped maybe things would improve with Balmer gone. Nope! Same old Microsoft, same old Microshit. Five years ago I switched to Linux and never looked back.
Linux is a solution for a small percentage of people. For most it isn’t.
See my post in #11.
They are desperate to track users. Word is out that user cannot disable so they are forcing users to upgrade. Totally expected
same reason Bill Clinton hits on women - because they can.
Thanks - I’ll check them out. Maybe it’s time! I’d love a good alternative to Windows.
Think Global....then think revenue flow....all going into the pot!
The more I sense someone is trying to strong-arm me into something, the more determined I am to do the opposite. Not only for my own self-respect, but if they want it so bad they’re strong-arming you, it ain’t someplace you want to go.
I turned off my automatic updates for windows precisely because of this crap. Now it must ASK my permission for ANY update. I like Win 7 just fine. I did this a couple months ago, based on advice from other freepers on a thread just like this one.
