Read that the Refuge is 60 miles south of Burns, that is in the middle of nowhere?
It is 60 miles south of the middle of nowhere.
Pretty remote, the Refuge is almost 300 square miles.
Sixty miles south of Burns is Frenchglen, a very small community. Went there once on business. I remember the quiet of the community when I stepped out of the car, the sounds of birds and the screech of a screen door a block away closing on hinges needing oil.
During my visit I heard stories of real cowboys that make Frenchglen and the area ranches an annual stopover.
The Feds have met up with the life blood of true Americans there. They are in over their heads.
Half way to Frenchglen. Post office, general store, not much more at the base of Steen’s mountain. Some of the best trout
fishing in the west.
