The U.S. opened the 2016 World Junior Championship with a stunning 4-2 victory over Canada by riding a three-goal third period. The game wasn't always pretty, but the Americans picked it up late to pull away from their North American rivals.
The game's first four goals were scored by first-round NHL draft picks, with Canada's Mathew Barzal, a New York Islanders prospect, opening things up with a second-period goal. That was followed by Team USA's and Ottawa Senators first-rounder Colin White tying things up on a great effort to get to the net. Zach Werenski (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Dylan Strome (Arizona Coyotes) traded goals in the third period before Team USA surprised Canada with a pair of quick strikes.

USA upsets Canada, Sweden loses NylanderDecember 26, 2015 - Leafs top prospect Nylander takes shot to head at world junior
Woo-Hoo!
For Freepers who aren’t necessarily hockey fans . . . this is maybe the most pure form of hockey you can see. This tournament is a fantastic couple of weeks.
You are absolutely correct in your statement. This is the hockey I love. This year my son gets to ref the regional tryouts for the national team. He has done districts for three years now.
USA fell to Sweden 1-0 today.
All games are worth three points in the standings. A team gets 3 points for a regulation win and 0 points for a regulation loss. For overtime games, the winning team gets 2 points and the losing team gets 1.
Thanks for the heads up. Team USA 7-0 over the Czechs, wow. Auston Matthews is the real deal.
He was born TWO DAYS after the cutoff for consideration in the 2015 draft.
Two days earlier and he'd be getting paid to play.
His loss is America's game.
It is a pure hockey - take a cheap hit or start a fight and you are out of the game AND the next one!
