Having solved all other problems plaguing our society, New York Times opinion author (and food journalist) Mark Bittman has his eye on the big prize. Taking a page from Michael Bloombergâs big government playbook, Mark is looking for a new way stop people from drinking soda. Since efforts to ban sales of any sort fell flat in the courts (pun intended) the author is looking for more of a generational change, and the way to do that is to stop kids from getting in the habit of drinking the sugary beverages at an early age. How do we do that? We start treating soda like tobacco and establish a minimum age to purchase it. (Daily Caller)
âItâs really the equivalent of saying smoking cigarettes makes you really cool. When youâre fourteen and you want to be cool, you should start smoking cigarettes. We donât allow that anymore,â said Bittman.
In the interview, Bittman claims he wants to start a discussion about carding kids who try buy soda. But his remarks suggests he is much more interested in providing answers to alleged problems, than asking questions about what would make good policy....

“ERRRRRRRPPP!!!”
people should be carded before going into “public service”
Control, control, control..
Where does it all end? Where do people have choices and where do we say you don’t have a choice in personal behavior?
They have been largely successful with banning smoking in public places in many locales around the country. Now they want to move on to banning soft drinks? What about diet sodas? What about sugary drinks such as lemonade or orange juice? Where do we stop with all this???
I remember when an opinion like the one highlighted in the article would be considered a parody of a parody. Then it simply slipped to parody status. Now, it no longer seems worthy to even check if it is true. Because it probably is.
Rather than fear stupidity, I’ve come to expect it, and not a day goes by that monumental stupidity fails to present itself.
I hope they do it. The young need to get a bellyful of government tyranny.
forget the weed ,they’ll have undercover soda sellers
When they put soda machines in restricted areas, they may as well add beer to them.
Maybe snarky remarks to the dad ordering soda for the family in the drive trhough, kind of like what some waiters do to pregnant women ordering a glass of wine with dinner.
How the heck do we go from soda and OJ to “creeping Shariah”
My personal opinion is soda and sugary drinks are poison and my kids won’t be allowed to have it.
However, I don’t want the government dictating what my kids can or cannot have.
We had beer in our barracks vending machines in Korea.
Wait.
We are okay with allowing a child to “decide” what sex they are.
However we are not okay with allowing them to decide if they want to drink soda?
Insanity!
Control. Sharia is control. Horrible news day. They will never stop.
The American left has become the High Priests of the Religion of Control demanding that we all bow at their alter of government.
Candy too, while he’s at it. Plus salty snacks, especially the “snack size” packages. That is “gateway food,” to harder stuff and bigger portions. Kids build up a tolerance, and need more and more.
We have had control in this country since Nixon declared a war on drugs.
This is nothing new. Most on this site support it.
