When I was in Hercegovina (BiH) during the nineties, I visited a refugee center with a friend who volunteered there. I was surprised to see all the gold jewelry the refugee women were wearing.
My daughter and I joked the ladies were wearing more gold jewelry than we owned. My friend said that the gold jewelry was useful as it could be used like money if the need arose.
People who live in war zones, politically volatile areas, and areas of persecution have the wisdom of their elders passed on to them at an early age. Gold, jewel stones, silver, etc., holds value over runaway inflation, portable and convertible. Read the accounts of escapees who saw the writing on the wall.
