When pressed back in the seventies Ali made many exceptionally anti-liberal statemensts (like adulterers should be stoned....in which case he would have been stoned shortly after his marriage) and other nasty things. Those were all overlooked by the liberal press who preferred to limn Ali as a hero who stood up to The Man. He was not a nice person.
