I'm curious if the different counts result from counting different waves (earlier vs later) of refugees.
From what I can tell one statistic is for refugees fleeing by boat across the Mediterranean from a variety of nations. These aren't all Syrians, but they are mostly male. This could make sense because escaping by ship is pretty physically demanding.
The other statistic, which shows a majority of women and children, is for a much larger population of just Syrian refugees.
