LBJ's Granddaughter Sworn in to Supreme Court Bar

It was a throwback moment at the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday when Catherine Robb, the granddaughter of the late president Lyndon Johnson, was admitted to the court's bar.

Her father Charles Robb, the former governor and U.S. senator from Virginia, moved her admission. It appeared that several justices recognized the presidential connection as she was sworn in to the bar.

"It's something my father and I talked about years ago," Catherine Robb said afterward. "It was an opportunity for my father to move my admission—a special bond between us."

Catherine Robb, 45, is counsel to Haynes and Boone in Austin, where she represents media-industry clients. She said she also sought admission because she may be writing amicus briefs in upcoming Supreme Court cases. "I thought it might come in handy."

Her mother, Lynda Bird Johnson Robb, the president's daughter, was in the public section at the court during the ceremony. Charles Robb is "officially retired," his daughter said, but remains active on corporate boards and in public policy organizations.

Catherine Robb said she and her parents stayed on after the admission ceremony to watch the two arguments on the docket. "It was a good opportunity to see the current solicitor general and former ones, too," she said, referring to SG Donald Verrilli Jr. and former SGs Gregory Garre and Paul Clement, who argued Wednesday.

They usually just mail out the certificates. Have to have connections to get the live ceremony.

It does impress folks that don’t realize it’s the easiest admission to get, and not very expensive.
