Ever read personal accounts of Americans heading out west? People reported tons of stuff left by the side of the trail. They had to lighten the load and just dumped there in the middle of nowhere. Same thing in this case....if you can’t carry...you dump it. No trash cans around, so don’t bother walking around to find some paper garbage can.
Yes.
And those were settlers.
Not ‘refugees’.
They were migrating.
And so are these people.
The REAL question: WHY are they there and not in Saudi Arabia their logical neighbors???

I don’t believe it was EVER food... They had sense enough to know they needed that. No one was going to furnish them with anything when they got to where they were going. It was no doubt long time family heirlooms, furniture and the like - all non-replaceable, treasured but weight they couldn’t afford to continue to carry.
