The slutty, ditzy mean girl of an archetype is fading from pop culture.
The word "cheerleader" is so laden with potential cultural meaning, it feels more like a theoretical concept than a noun usually meaning "person who leads cheers."
As a sport, cheerleading has been steadily gaining respect since the turn of the 21st century. As an archetype, it has shriveled into a token of hypersexuality and the nastiest teen girl stereotypes, a sort of shorthand for the terms "mean girl," "slut" and "dumb blonde," all stuffed into the same midriff-bearing uniform.

This is why Texas A&M has “yell leaders” (all male.)
Whoop
I’m going to hazard a guess that Ms. Duca was not a cheerleader in either high school or college.
I’m going to hazard a guess that Ms. Duca was not at the top of her class academically, as well: midriff-bearing > midriff-baring.
My wife (blonde, in her 50s, petite, and still with a figure that most 20 somethings envy) was a cheerleader.
She qualified for mensa, is just short of her comp sci doctorate, and is a multi-published author.
She is also a staunch conservative and finds Huffpo to be a collection of collosal ignorance.
Go figure.
Good work Mrs Coyote ......:o)
One of my step daughters was a cheerleader. She is now an ocular surgeon.
Lefty stereotypes are vicious.
LOL!
No wonder their teams suck!
I suppose we all bear midriffs...
Obviously written by a butt-ugly diesel-half-track wildebeast lesbo who’s never been within ten feet of a naked man. Her Freudian slip is showing...
I always wanted pro baseball to have cheerleaders. It is a slow game and squads of nubile cheerleaders roaming foul territory would go a long way toward spicing that up. Sure,t here would be the occasional random death by foul ball or a bat slipping from a hitters hands. Such a small price to pay for having cheerleaders at baseball games. The 7th inning “stretch” would never be the same!
I’ll choose bare midriffs over bearing midriffs any day of the week.
(Now where’s that pic of Barbara Eden in her Jeannie outfit?)
You are one lucky guy!
A cheerleader I knew from high school is now a scientist working in the field of neurology. I guess she and Mrs Coyote didn’t get the memo.
I go for girls who believe in the right to bare arms.
midriff-bearing?
Football and cheerleaders are a very big deal where I live now. These kids are featured prominently in our local paper, along with homecoming court. They’re not all white, blonde blue eyed kids, either. Black kids are among the high-achievers, no affirmative action necessary and nobody makes a big deal one way or the other.
Moving to a rural area is the best thing I ever did.
A bit hard to tell. But if she was, she's sort of let herself go over the past few years.
