2008 was the last time I took an actual vacation. I did go to Gettysburg this week, but I did it in a day so I wouldn’t have to pay for a hotel room.

I’m a big advocate for Euro-style vacations.

My staff work their asses off. I think they should get four weeks a year. This idea of “just work the year” I think is actually counterproductive. Naturally, that’s just my opinion.

Poor Florida residents who live in vacationland never get vacations. Disney, Universal, world-class beaches, the space center, resorts, and cruises—all within driving distance. It’s horrid being stuck here without our three days of fall color and being cursed with endless sunshine and warmth in the middle of winter. Work, work, work—no vacations. Woe is us.

I like taking a few short vacations every year. Interstate highway chaos because of semis and construction, less pleasant hotel experiences, horrendous weather in some places I’d like to visit, and now having to worry about out of control protestors in some cities all make the thought of a few days vacation less appealing.

More than 135 million Americans, or 56%, say they haven't taken a vacation in the last 12 months, compared to 126 million Americans, or 52%, who reported going without a vacation for a year in 2014, according to a telephone survey of 1,000 Americans.

Even more obviously garbage data than usual.

What’s a vacation? I’ve spent every non-work day off for the past 20 years dealing with family issues and caring for ill relatives including my dying father. That last was a combo of my accrued time and family leave and the company canned me over the phone a week after he died.

I haven’t gone anywhere for a purely recreational purpose since the last century, literally.

I am in a new job now and currently have 90 hours of accrued leave after nearly a year, and this has to cover sick, vacation, personal AND holidays which are not freebie days.

Burned out? Yeah a bit. But I have a lot of company.

Those statistics don’t surprise me. ~ Half of workers live paycheck to paycheck. About half of the jobs in the US are breadwinner jobs that would provide the means to take a vacation.

100 miles??

I'd say that many now vacation in their own back yard and take day trips or just go camping.

Of course it was the good old days....no phone...no TV.....

We drove 25 miles to a campsite and everyone was happy. The fun was fighting with the tent and our little boys really enjoyed watering the trees.

I think it is just the fact that conservative Americans take things seriously whether it be raising a family, performing at work, maintaining their property and just overall executing responsibilities. I really never saw my father especially relaxed until the house was paid for, retirement set & the girls were married off. In his case that was around age 62, at which point his idea of enjoyment was buying the rattiest property he could fined and renovating it to (his idea of) perfection.

Given that definition, I’ve never had a vacation in my adult life.

We take a REAL vacation every fifth year - otherwise, a few long weekends during the ‘off’ years.

Almost the other half are government employees of one sort or another, so they get paid holidays AND vacations (at our expense).

Just too darned busy at work. No opportunity to get away for more than a long weekend here and there. My last day off was to take wife to the doctor. The next time I’ll be out of the office more than two days will be for a business trip.
